The whey market is the oldest place of Berlin. It lies in Berlin center southeast the Nikolaiviertels nearly to the Spree. The place is dominated today by old persons the city hall of 1911 with its high tower and its Spitzkuppel. The place is cut by busy roads in the city into east west and north south direction, so that it is noticed hardly still as place.

History

Already before the first mention of Berlin (1244) and (1237) one acted there and one gefeilscht. The newly opened new market to the Marienkirche ran it end 13. Century rank as chief market off. In former times the whey market "of the Olde market was called ". 1685 it was designated after the mill yard dairy-farm, which sold its milk products here. Another derivation sees the names after Mollen (niederdt. for mills) derived from the mill dam. The market was closed after short time again by cure prince Friedrich III. and converted to the parade place. In 18. Century developed ring around the place several aristocracy palaces from those however only one received is. On the north side the Ephraim palace torn off after 1930 was again developed around 1985.

Planning

Planning for the place plans a closer land development following the historical place form. However this containment from traffic-technical view and because of separating the city hall from the place is not undisputed as place-dominating building.
