The Weiherberg lies over the former monastery Christian garden in the about 13 kilometers to the west of in Bavarian Swabia. The mountain was settled at least since the late Bronzezeit and became in 10. Century n.Chr to a large Hungary protection castle developed.

History

The castle area was examined 1937 (E. Frickhinger) archaeologically. Here were settlement traces of the late hill grave bronze time, the urn field culture and the early

The oldest attachment remainders point likewise to the urn field time. These attachments were extended in the

The small entrenchment at the northeast edge of the mountain plateau is regarded to karolingischer time position as castle place (save), a completely similar plant is appropriate in the proximity on the . Such small castles probably served in times of distress as place of refuge for yards lying in the valley.

During the Hungary ideas in the first half of the 10. century the mountain was removed to one of the largest protection castles in the area of the diocese Augsburg. In the south one submitted - for Hungary barriers typical - graduated the rider approximation obstacles to the older main barrier.

Today the Weiherberg lies completely within a private game enclosure, is however freely accessible.

Description

The attachment remainders rotate the entire plateau, about 600 meters high mountain massif. The difference in height to the amounts to scarcely 100 meters. The umwallte surface is approximately 10 hectares (approx. 450 x 320 m) largely. The mountain is well protected at three sides by the natural, rocky steep rock slopes.

The flatter south side became secured by a 432 meter long barrier, which follows the edge of an area hollow in the west after 130 meters. Here, between them runs a Berme on 100 meters in, up to five deep ditch is pre-aged meters.

Eastward the barrier pulls itself the slope up to the high surface, where it keeps running arc-shaped up to the eastern steep rock slope. The barrier height amounts to outside up to 4.5 meters, inward still about 3.8 meters. Two of the three way break-throughs are modern origin, which western barrier gap could mark the former main gate. The barrier process yields here reciprocally somewhat back.

The western slope is reinforced after one, to the main barrier following rock massif by two, artificially abgesteilte slope edges. The lower attachment line meets a rock massif in the north, which pulls itself upper up to "„saves "“in northeasthits a corner. The steep eastern side might have carried probably only a

During the excavation Frickhingers showed up on the main barrier the remainders of two Trockenmauern into loam bedding. The younger wall sits on the debris of the older, both by senkrechte post positions was stabilized.

One submitted rider approximation obstacles to the main barrier during the time of the Hungary wars in the endangered places. Before the main ditch a second, flat resoling ditch was dug. Perpendicularly before the external ditch one raised 27, about 8 meters long earth latch plates, which bewachsen probably with reinforced or with thorny brush were. Before it 47 further, short earth embossments were put on. Such approximation obstacles not possibly made it for the asiatic Reiterkriegern to attack the main barrier directly. Ideally they were forced to serving. These earth ribs, ditches and wolf pits are a special characteristic of the large Hungary protection castles in the area of the bishops of Augsburg and the following areas.

The main barrier of the Weiherberges is however not to be addressed as classical Hungary barrier, since an older attachment plant was only modernized here and adapted to the new requirements.
