The plague column stands at the ditch (a in such a way designated road course) in the Viennese city center and is one of the most well-known and most salient plastic works of art in the city.
1679 raged in Vienna one of the last large plague epidemic diseases. On the escape from the city praised emperor Leopold I. the establishment of a grace column on completion of the plague epidemic disease. Still in the same year a provisional wood column was inaugurated by Johann which showed a grace chair to one korinthischen column as well as nine angel figures (for the nine choirs of the angels). 1683 went the order for the marble execution to Matthias's smoke Miller, who however already died 1686 and left some angel figures. Afterwards numerous planning, among other things also from Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, came to whom the program of the base figures decreases/goes back. In the long run the direction of the project Paul Strudel was transferred, who relied on the program of the Theateringeneurs Lodovico Burnacini. Burnacini planned a cloud pyramid with angel figures and a figure of the faith below the Dreifaltigkeit, before which a praying emperor Leopold knelt. Among the sculptors involved were also Tobias Kracker and Johann Bendel. 1693 could be geweiht the column then.
Despite the long construction period, the changes of plan and the number of sculptors involved the monument makes a homogeneous impression. During the planning time it changed itself from a simple and conservative devotion column to a high-baroque production, in which a happening theatrical is told. The monument indicates thus to Vienna the transition to the high baroque. It was style-coining/shaping and generally speaking Austrian area was copied.
