The tree barrier was a part of the Hamburg city attachment established from 1616 to 1625. It separated at the inland port lain from the Norderelbe.
Until 1852 the inland port was impassable made at night with trunks. The port range beyond this safe zone was called Niederhafen. Today a sport boat port is in the Niederhafen
The two guards of the harbour police, which were responsible for this safety device, had to yield 1911 the building that Hamburg underground.
Further barriers were the Niederbaum above the Niederhafens and the upper tree at the upper port lying outside of the attachment. These secured the wall cream, for a fleet between the old part of town and the island Grasbrook.
