Tierpark Hellabrunn is the name of the zoo of Munich.

Situation

The Tierpark Hellabrunn lies in the urban district 18 Untergiesing Harlaching embedded in the landscape protection area of the Isarauen with the old hotel Siebenbrunn, underneath the steep bank, which is crowned above by the Harlachinger pc. - Anna Kircherl, a bead of the baroque, opposite the quarter Thalkirchen on the other Isarseite, and extends up to the Marienklause. The area becomes pulled through of the Auer Because of the high ground-water level there are on the whole area a great many wells, which feed the enormous hydrodynamic tank system, with which the Tierpark its complete need of water for the plants and animals from self-water to cover can.

History

The Tierpark opened 1911, thus relatively late compared with the establishments of other zoo-logical gardens in Germany (Berlin 1844, Frankfurt/Main, Cologne, Hamburg and other one in in and the 60's 50's the 19. Century. Munich had also at that time already a zoo-logical garden, which made bankruptcy however after few years.

The first Tierpark

The today's Tierpark lies in the south of the city in the eastern Isarauen. On a part of the 36 hectar of large area a mill from that was to 14. Century. This southernmost Untergiesinger mill was torn off 1902 and with their abort succeeded the break-through for the durable establishment of a zoo for Munich. After other which are applicable locations had separated, one decided for the area, which belonged to the aristocracy seat and Hellabrunn. On 25 February 1905 the association zoo-logical garden registered association was created by considerable resident of Munich Honoratioren, the city Munich put to it the Hellabrunner area for sixty years free of charge at the disposal. The artistic master planner for the Tierpark comes from the architect Emanuel from Seidl, which used the slope area with its Nagelfluhfelsen and the Auenlandschaft durchflossenen of the Auer skillfully, in order to make one possible nature near animal husbandry. On 1 August 1911 the Tierpark could be opened. Still the zoo was not a geographical zoo, but hoof animals from different continents tummelten themselves e.g. on "„the Heufresserwiese "“kunterbunt. Some were still rather provisional; the today's elephant house originates however already from that time. Because of shortage of money due to the inflation the Tierpark had to already close 1922 again. Numerous mechanisms were dismantled, the lion house of 1911 was torn off; the buildings purged.

Reopening 1928

In the year 1925 within "„the auxiliary federation of the residents of Munich inhabitant shank "“an animal park committee was created and one tackled the reconstruction. To 23. May 1928 was brought the Tierpark Hellabrunn under director Heinz tail, who took up ideas of the ingenious animal dealer and Hamburg zoo founder Carl Hagenbeck, as the first geo zoo (the arrangement of the animal species took place after their geographical origin) to the world to new bloom and attained thanks of the progressive concept and the successful back and new breeding of become extinct animal species such as Tarpan and tail cattle (that the become extinct Auerochsen resembles) world-wide acknowledgment and admittingness. In the 30's the built anthropoid house with aquarium ranked at that time among the most modern world; it was in such a way likes that the Tierpark could require an extra admission fee for it until 1969.

The Second World War and interim solutions

In the Second World War the zoo suffered heavy bomb damage, also numerous animals fell the air raids to the victim. But already in the middle of May 1945 could be opened the Tierpark again. As provisional accommodation for the animals one used partial former horse military hospital barracks from the war. Some these interim solutions remained more than 20 years existing, because still little money was to the Tierpark at the disposal (it did not receive building subsidies of the city Munich) and new buildings could hardly be built. The Zebras and Antilopen were accommodated until 1972 in such a auxiliary stable, the camels even into the 1980er years. 1960 donated Helmut Horten to the zoo more than million DM, with the help of this money plants for game goats and game sheep, a wolf enclosure as well as exhibition pavilion were built. Tail led the zoo until 1968.

New buildings starting from 1972

Around 1970 the Tierpark in a bad condition and many renovations were and new buildings were overdue. Therefore one set up a general development plan to 1972 for the renewal of the animal park plant. Finally also the city Munich made larger subsidies available. Starting from 1972 one tackled the fundamental renewal of nearly all plants. Already from 1970 on the anthropoid station was reconditioned and it also exterior installations for Gibbons was built. One replaced the lattices by less disturbing bullet-proof glass disks. 1975 followed the opening of the new Polariums with plants for penguins, polar bears and seals. Likewise a child animal park and a stroking zoo were built.

one established 1980 after a draft of the architect freely Otto a large Voliere for birds, a surface exaggerated by 5.000 m now 18 m a high high-grade steel fabric. Meanwhile this Grossvoliere became a landmark of Hellabrunn. The ape house was extended 1983 with a plant for Lemuren, new world apes and Siamangs. The external enclosures of the game goats and were arranged more natural 1985/86. In the 90's a new camel stable was added, likewise a new Nashornhaus.

Followed large glasshouse for turtles and insects, one new jungle tent for Raubtiere and tropical birds and 2004 a new jungle house for Schimpansen, gorillas, Mississippi alligators and some reptile and fish types; also the aquarium was reconditioned. The elephant house was substantially converted and modernized from 2002 to 2004. The river horses had to yield the change, which became range the area of the elephants attached, so that now also the elephant bull has its own, generous range. At present the anthropoid station is transformed, so that the Orang Utans in a plant more generously held can be. Temporarily one planned also to build on the northern side of the animal parking race a Delfinarium these plans failed however, despite standing financing, at that there resident allotment settlement.

To 5. March 2006 had to close the zoo for the first time since 1945 because of extreme snow.

Zoo today

Hellabrunn was transformed to the first"” geo zoo "“. That means no arrangement of the enclosures and animal species more on the basis of systematic, but on the basis of geographical criteria.

The Tierpark has total stocks of approximately 7700 vertebrate animals of 340 kinds. The visitor can often observe the animals over water ditches or behind glass without disturbing lattices or fences in large enclosures with old tree existence under relatively natural living conditions. Also the diagrams differ from the conventional descriptions of kind, the visitors can many background informations here experience.

The natural habitats of the Isarauenlandschaft offer ideal conditions for the preservation breed, which the zoo used up itself ever more. The modern zoo concept does consciously without exaggerated diversity of species and orients themselves after possibility at the well-being of the animals. For the Silbergibbon the Tierpark leads the European breed book. Hellabrunn registers the attendance of approximately 1.4 million animal lovers per year (2003).
