The fortress Rothenberg is a fortress on, 588 m of the same name the high mountain with Schnaittach in the Frankish Alb.

In 18. Century was established the today's plant of the cure prince of Bavaria after French model as important Rococo fortress (construction period from approx. 1729 to 1750). Occasionally 400 soldiers were accommodated. It is delighted on the geschleiften remainders of an older and smaller attachment plant, which was established on the remainders of a still older castle ruin.

Built against only the 25km if Nuremberg removed, the fortress should protect the border of Bavaria from Franconias. 1806 attached Napoleon Franconia at Bavaria and thus redundantly became the fortress as border fortress. It was used however still as feared fortress prison.
