The tourism economy (travel branch) ranks world-wide among the largest industries. 1997 obtained it according to data of the world tourism organization a gross income of approx. 35 trillion US-$. It absorbs 11% of the consumer expenditures of the western industrial nations. With world-wide approx. 100 millions persons employed it is the largest employer under the industries. Transnational journeys constitute 25-30% of the world trade within the service range. Higher conversions are obtained if necessary still in the auto and the oil industry. For many regions the tourism became the most important occupation basis.
Nevertheless the incomes are distributed, 50% of it by only seven countries (the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria) are most unequally obtained nevertheless, while the entire third world (without Eastern Asia/Pacific) must be content with 5% of the incomes. In all other respects the native population participates hieran in measures below average, her nevertheless usually with subordinated tasks is usually entrusted, while the guidance activities foreigners remain reserving and the cost of living for all equally to rise. In addition a part of the tourism incomes flows back to that extent again into the countries of origin of the travelers, when equipment for the routistic infrastructure must be bought there.
In Germany the tourism industry obtained a million employing a conversion of 140 billion with 2,8 ". 116 million guests spent 339 million overnight accomodation in 54.166 accommodations with approx. 2.6 million beds. 4.000 of the 12,431 municipalities Germany is organized in tourism federations, 310 of it is recognized as therapeutic baths or health resorts. Among other things 6,135 museums, 366 theatres, 34 leisure and experience parks, 45,000 tennis places, 648 golf courses, 122 national/nature parks and/or biosphere reservations, a moving way net of 190.000 km as well as 40,000 km of wheel remote ways are to the guests at the disposal.

2004 undertook German 274 million journeys, from which 73% led into the inland. They booked 1.4 billion overnight accomodation and spent 120 billion ", from which 61.4 billion was allotted " to journeys abroad.
With 65 million journeys it concerned vacation trips (purpose: Recovery; Minimum period: 4 overnight accomodation). 48,1 millions Germans over 14 years participated in at least one vacation trip, which corresponds to a travel intensity of 74,4%. The most popular destination here was Germany with 30,8%, about which alone 6.7 per cent points were allotted to Bavaria. On the places followed Spain with 13,6%, Italy with 7,4%, Austria with 6,5% and Turkey with 6,4%. 6.1% were allotted to remote journeys. With 48% of the journeys on and departure with the passenger car, with 36% with the airplane, with 10% with the bus and with 6% with the course took place. The travel duration amounted to on the average 12.9 days, the costs " 812. - per person.
Central information centre for consumers and tourism economy is in Germany the German center for tourism (DZT). For consumers and tourism economy in Austria Austria advertisement is central portal and approach place. In Switzerland there are two roof federations, which notice the protection of interests of the tourism. Switzerland tourism as marketing organization. On political and economical level Swiss tourism federation (STV) operates the Lobbying.
Tourism can be usually studied in Germany as emphasis within the BWL, in the context of geography or as own course of studies tourism/tourism or tourism BWL. At the professional school Eberswalde exists a course of studies lasting tourism.
