The pure mountains are a mountain range in the Ilm circle in Thuringia.

The chain lies in north south direction and is about 10 kilometers long. West the pure mountains are limited by the valley of the Gera. The eastern border is the Wipfra. North the pure mountains reach to to the city boundary Arnstadts, south up to the Ilmenauer local part Heyda.

The highest collections of the pure mountains lie in approximately 600 meters height. The most important mountain of the chain is the 604 meters high pure castle between Plaue and pure field, where in the Middle Ages a robbery knight castle was, which was conquered in the year 1290 by king Rudolf by having castle and the city Erfurt and destroyed afterwards. In the northern part of the pure mountains the 485 meters high cow mountain lies with THEN home. The southernmost mountain is the 552 meters high Veronikaberg with Martinroda. Across the pure mountains a moving way, the part of the main moving way leads iron oh - Jena is.

Geology and vegetation

The mountain range from rocks of the Triasformation, lying in south north direction, was formed. They consist mainly of shelly limestone. The weather formed in the course of thousands of years partly bizarre rock, which resemble those in the Elbsandsteingebirge. A result of these Gesteinsformationen is a Karstquelle at the west slope of the pure mountains, jumps from Plaue.

Due to the slopes and deeply cut valleys like the Kleinbreitenbacher, dropping steeply particularly at the west side, boiler and the Ziegenried and the associated different micro climates were formed a very various vegetation here. While the plateau ranges consist particularly of lime beech forests as well as calibration and one finds locations of many submediterraner plant types at the southwest slopes also.
