The pumped storage power station (PSW) Goldisthal is a pump-fed power station in the slate mountains at the upper run of the Schwarza between Goldisthal and disk when brook and in the year 2003 in enterprise was taken.

It is with an output of 1.060 MW the largest hydro-electric power plant of Germany and one of largest Europe.

Due to intensive arguments with the nature protection federation FEDERATION led the building indirectly to the establishment of the nature donation David.

The upper reservoir artificially put on is a height of approximately 880 m over NN on the MOO mountain level at the large Farmdenkopf and seizes a utilizable volume of approx. 12 millions m water with a surface of 55 hectars. This quantity of water is enough for eight hours turbine full load enterprise and could supply the Free State Thuringia thereby alone. Around this basin to create the former mountain summit was cleared away.

By two about 800 m long penstocks, which are bent against the horizontal around 25 degrees, the upper reservoir is connected to an underground cavity with the pumping turbines in a large machine Kaverne (L/B/H 137m/26m/49m), several hundred meters deeply in the mountain. The difference in height amounts to thereby scarcely 350 M. beside the machine Kaverne existed also a likewise very large Trafo Kaverne (L/B/H 122m/15m/17m).

After Turbinendurchfluss the water is led by large pipings back into the Unterbecken and flows there more than 20 m underneath the water level. This basin designed as artificial lake seizes about 18.9 million m and is on a height of 550 m over NN, thus amounts to the nominal hoisting depth with the Heraufpumpen of the water well 300 M. the Unterbecken by the head of the Schwarza through 67 m a high dam about 500 m above the locality Goldisthal is formed. The Schwarza artificial lake fulfills also certain flood protection functions, which are rather small however, since it departs with the Schwarza within this range, not even for 3 kilometer from its source, rather around a brook as around a river act. The Unterbecken has a Vorsperre named which 0.7 millions m water adjusts nearly and the elevator fluctuations of the Unterbeckens of the previous river course.

As characteristic exists in Goldisthal the first speed adjusted pump storage units in Europe. From that altogether 4 pumping turbines work two with more variable (asynchronous) and two with more constant (synchronous) number of revolutions. Such combined sets, which can angepassen their achievement both in the turbine enterprise during the energy production and in the pumping enterprise during the energy supply flexibly and continuously to the requirements and thus with the optimal efficiency to be operated to be able, became before only in Japan in enterprise taken.

History of the building

From the outset planning was very disputed for the building of this power station and led to the broad resistance in particular from groups of environmental protection, in particular from FEDERATION and the Green league, those the large-scale project not only because of the landschaftlichen and ecological interference (the area concerned was among other things a habitat of the threatened by becoming extinct), but also as "“Energiefresser"” strongly criticized.

1965 became the first considerations of the GDR the building of a pump-fed power station at this location admits. 1975 began the engineer-geological investigation and the first measures for building preparation. Over 200 hectars forest were gerodet and built a zufahrtsstrasse. In the years following on it extensive ground connection and rock works were accomplished. 1980/1981 were stopped the large-scale project because of shortage of money. 1988 decided the GDR government the resumption of the building preparations and thus the continuation of the project. After the reunification 1991 the project examined the united energy works AG (VEAG) for its economy and came to a positive result. Thereupon planning was driven and 1993 the plan statement procedure were European Union far written out again in front the building. 1996 submitted the FEDERATION Thuringia with the Administrative Court Meiningen complaint against the building. This law case between VEAG and FEDERATION was settled 1997, since on the one hand the hopelessness of the complaint became fast clear and on the other hand the VEAG was interested in a brisk procedure and searched therefore the comparison out of court. With the negotiated comparison sum of approx. 3.58 million euro (accurately 7 million DM) the FEDERATION called the "“nature donation David"” in the year 1998 after complaint retreat, an environmental donation "“for the promotion of projects for the nature protection and of regenerativ energies in the new Lands of the Federal Republic"”, in the life.

Still 1997 finally began the construction work. 2003 were progressively taken up the power station operation and opened on 30 September 2003 the power station officially. Since 2004 all four sets run in continuous operation. Enterprises becomes the PSW Goldisthal today from the energy company Vattenfall Europe AG.

Tourism

The wooded surrounding field power station of the Goldisthal is a popular moving area. Meanwhile also the pump-fed power station is and its both lakes a trip goal for energy-industry interested one, which the visitor formation center at the power station and the prospect platforms with far views into the surrounding landscape can use.

Any spare time and water-sporty use of the two artificial lakes is however forbidden for safety reasons, since the water levels can to vary during the power station operation around several meters and develop strong currents as well as vortices.
