The Plassenburg is a castle plant lain over the city Kulmbach. It is one of the imposantesten castle plants of Germany and landmark of the city. She was mentioned for the first time 1135. Starting from 1340, first as a castle count von the Hohenzollern prevailed. After the destruction 1554 it was again established by the architect Caspar Vi as rondelliertes lock. After Kulmbach fell 1810 to the Kingdom of Bavaria, the castle was used as military hospital and also as penintentiary. Since 1929 are restored the Plassenburg by the national Bavarian lock administration.

In the time of the national socialism the National Socialist federation of German technology (NSBDT) under Fritz Todt operated on the Plassenburg a training course plant. In addition the former penintentiary and the beautiful yard were converted generously by the architect Siegfried Schmelcher.

Today the German tin figure museum, the national museums Plassenburg with the army museum Friedrich the large one and the museum Hohenzollern in Franconias, as well as the landscape museum upper Main with exhibits are accommodated for the local history and geography of the Kulmbacher of surrounding countryside in the castle. The beautiful yard is used for cultural meetings.
