The Planetarium at the Insulaner in Berlin is a Grossplanetarium with scarcely 300 seats and because of its Zeiss projector also Zeiss Planetarium at the Insulaner is called. The Insulaner is a rubble mountain, on which the William Foerster observatory stands.

Both institutions are summarized in the association William Foerster observatory registered association with Planetarium at the Insulaner.

The Planetarium is located in the old district beautiful mountain and/or in the new district Tempelhof beautiful mountain at the Munsterdamm at the border to the district Steglitz Zehlendorf (old district Steglitz).

The building

Of the Planetarium the dome visible of the road is characteristic. In their the lecture and demonstration hall are accommodated. There astronomical and cultural meetings take place. The input area with the entrance hall and various showcases, to it follows next door the building of offices, in which also a seminar area and administration and technical areas are. Behind it is the library in which there are astronomical literature and magazines. The library is built as tower, which is vitreous like the entire office building and shines with lighting bluish.

The history of the Planetariums is to reread in handling of the Planetariumskuppel and in the Kurzportrait "„the William Foerster observatory registered association in Berlin "“.

The history of the Planetariums

On 18 June 1965 the Planetarium is opened. The dome has a diameter of 20 meters. The projector originates likewise from the year 1965 and is of the type Zeiss Vb. Thus 4,000 stars can be projected artificially to the cover of the Planetariums. First to the Planetarium a small lecture-room was opened, which were summarized under the designation "„Planetarium and training building "“. With it the destroyed Planetarium at the zoo was replaced. The location at the Insulaner is well selected, because the Planetarium and the observatory can be combined. Thus there is a complete astronomical people center at a place, which generally simplifies not only the administration and the visitor meetings, but the astronomical research.

1972 are extended the training building of the Planetariums by an optical laboratory. With the building of the Sonnenteleskops 1982 a direct transmission of the picture became possible into the Planetarium, because this telescope is on the roof of the Planetariums. 1980 are begun to build the building of offices. 1988 burn the Planetarium and must be repaired. The technology remains intact, but the copper roof and the Bestuhlung must be renewed. 1989 are built the library. 1991 can be taken the laser plant in enterprise. Starting from September 1995 also radio play cinemas are offered. Starting from October 1995 the Internet appearance of the WFS starts. But the cinema projectors cannot be used any longer starting from autumn 1995, since they are in a desolate condition. further computer-technical mechanisms can go to 1996/1997 into enterprise: the server for enamels of members and an image processing system. On 22 October 1997 the William Foerster observatory is 50 years old. 2003 the Planetariumskuppel are reconditioned (the projector so long brought in) and the seats renewed.

In October 2005 the Planetarium at the Insulaner becomes 40 years old. The association celebrated this in the Planetarium with a long night of the stars and the premiere of a new lecture on Einstein.

The technical equipment

The dome is equipped with the Planetariumsprojektor, which is used for various meetings, which can be if necessary also brought in however. All around the panorama of Berlin is cultivated from aluminum, so that a realistic impression develops for the visitor. Apart from the possibility of showing the starlit sky with different light contamination and this at any place and at any time, projectors ensure for the fact that clouds are faded in, landscapes and panoramas are shown and meteors to be seen are. Light effects can be created by the laser projectors, which (with fog) are recognizable in the dome and (also without nebulas) from the wall of the dome. Besides dia. and video projectors belong to the mechanism. Finally there are various possibilities of bringing music and sound effects into the program with.

The offered programs

In the Planetarium in the week in the morning child programs are shown, which are co-ordinated with the respective age for the kindergarten and groups of grades. There are fairy tales such as Peterchens moon travel and also adventure stories, which have astronomical purchase. Several times per week the so-called monthly topics are shown in the afternoon, shown in it the current starlit sky over Berlin and described then a topic from the astronomy. This topic is usually a easy to understand representation of current results from the astronomy, space travel and physics. On Wednesdays traditionally special astronomical topics are presented by guests and can be discussed by the visitors. Straight one on weekend gives it also numerous meetings, with which the starlit sky serves "„as window blind "“, so for example literary conceptions and music programs. Of classical music over music 19. Century up to electronic music everything is represented. The program is characterised by large variety, also which concerns the origin of the music: Beside Central European sources among other things also Japanese or Irish pieces are played. There are many meetings as concerts, which are played live. Different Lasershows is played in the change, with which the sound plant is also particularly exhausted. Sundays the Planetarium dedicates itself again, in various child programs can astronomical bases to v. A. the smaller visitors be learned, music heard and to fairy tales listened.

The addressed location advantage of Planetarium and observatory is particularly practical, because the visitors can combine both. Planetarium and observatory co-operate also with astronomical live-events, depending upon weather conditions can astronomical pictures from the observatory or from all world into the dome of the Planetariums be transferred.

The Planetarium can be used also for weddings.

Beside courses of different degrees of difficulty also the work of the working groups is in the association likes. The astronomical working group is a general meeting place for amateur astronomers, beyond that gives it to working groups about astrophotography, astrometry, citizen of Berlin moon observer, planet, Internet, mobile observatory, status of information, astronomical-geographical Exkursion, the computer in the application, satellites, sun and variable one of stars.

Particularly are the radio play cinemas like, in co-operation with the broadcast Berlin Brandenburg (rbb). The combination of brilliant starlit sky and crime films, exciting thrillers spanndenden or admitted to public successes as practical proved.
