Is accommodated the citizens of Berlin picture gallery since 1998 in a new building at the cultural forum and shows European painting of 13. up to 18. Century. It is considered as one of the most important art collections of the world.

History

The picture gallery was from the beginning the most important range 1830 open old persons of the museum. The entire upper floor was reserved you. From the royal locks about 350 paintings, 70 from the 1815 acquired collection of the Roman Marchese Giustiniani (1564-1637) and 677 pictures from the collection of the English buyer Edward being, by switching of Benjamin Wegner and William Christian Benecke, the director and the owner of the Modum blue color work came.

On these bases systematic and successful purchase politics of experts developed, among them Gustav balances, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, Christian Daniel smoke, William of Humboldt and William of Bode, which carried examples of all large European schools together and which completed collection.

1904 became the picture gallery as own collection in the again built emperor Friedrich museum, which transfers today's Bodemuseum, where the paintings were partly grouped with sculptures of the time to ensembles. 1930 were paged out a large part of the collection from space reasons into the German museum in the Pergamonmuseum.

In the last days of the Second World War the high shelter Friedrichshain burned. 400 large sized pictures, under it many important works, were destroyed.

After the division of Berlin 1945, a part remained in the Bodemuseum, most pictures however into the Dahlemer museums was spent. After the German reunification one could unite the consisting of the east and western part of the city in the again built picture gallery at the cultural forum.

Building of the museum

New building sketched by the architects Heinz Hilmer and Christoph upholsterer and Thomas Albrecht is rectangular on somewhat spoiled sketch and has in the building center a long which stands up to a well installation of Walther de Maria completely empty. Over this resounds puts 18 halls and as the second layer of 41 cabinets. Approximately 1,000 that altogether 2,900 works is here durably issued. In a study gallery in the base projectile 400 further pictures are accommodated and given place for special exhibitions. The building offers an exhibition surface of approximately 7,000 square meters.

Opening times

  • Monday: closed
  • Tuesday and Wednesday: 10:00 Uhr-18: 00 o'clock
  • Thursday: 10:00 Uhr-22: 00 o'clock
  • Friday until Sunday: 10:00 Uhr-18: 00 o'clock

Thursday evening is museum evening: In each case four hours before locking receive all visitors to free entrance.
