History

The first Pergamonmuseum

The oldest Pergamonmuseum became 1897 - 1899 by Fritz Wolff (1847-1921) delighted and 1901 open with the exposure of the portrait of Carl Humann, created by Adolf The halation of the museum building at that time contained already further architecture from Pergamon, Priene and magnesia.

The second Pergamonmuseum

Since the monumental objects found with the excavations in Babylon, Uruk, Assur and Egypt could be not adequately shown in the first building and this in addition soon damage showed, there was already 1907 planning of William of Bode, the director of the emperor Friedrich museum, for a new building in same place. In this the frontasiatic department and (since 1927 planned) the Islamic art department should find accomodation apart from antique architectures in the north wing the German art of the Nachantike in the German museum, in the south wing.

Only 1930 could the building of the three-wing plant be essentially locked and the four museums therein be opened.

The Second World War and its consequences

During the air raids on Berlin the Pergamonmuseum was heavily met; many exhibits were paged out to safe places, the pieces of monumental were partially immured. 1945 secured art protection officers of the Red Army all mobile existence in the East part of Berlin for a large victory museum Stalins. Only 1958 was returned most existence to the GDR. However still substantial parts of the collections are contrary to international law in the depots of the Puschkin museum in Moscow and the Eremitage in pc. Petersburg. The return of these existence, under it the famous treasure of the Priamos, was specified 1990 between the Federal Republic and Russia contractually, became however so far by the Russian parliament, which prevent Duma, and by directors of museum in Moscow and pc. Petersburg.

Exhibition

The museum shows different pieces of antique monumental architecture, among which most important and most well-known exhibits rank:

  • the Pergamonaltar
  • the market gate of Milet
  • the Ischtar gate and the process ion road of Babylon
  • the Mschatta front

The Pergamonmuseum contains collections of three museums: the antique collection, the museum for Islamic art and the frontasiatic museum.

Antique collection

The antique collection decreases/goes back to the brandenburgischen cure princes, who collected objects of the classical antiquity. With the purchase of the collection of a Roman archaeologist 1698 the actual antique collection was justified. The public accessible a part of the collection with the opening of the old person of museum became first 1830. Important parts of the collection were supplemented by the archaeological excavations in Olympia, Samos, Pergamon, Milet, Priene and Didyma.

The antique collection is accommodated at two locations. A part of the antique collection is in the Pergamonmuseum, the other one in the Hauptgeschoss of the old person of museum.

The collection shows works of art of the Greek and Roman antique ones: Architecture, plastics, inscriptions, mosaics, bronze and decoration. The two points of main attraction are the Pergamonaltar from that 2. Century v. Chr., whose Skulpturenfries represents impressing the fight of the Gods with the giants, as well as the market gate of Milet from Roman time.

With the division of Germany after the Second World War also the antique collection was divided, 1959 were again-opened the Pergamonmuseum in east Berlin, the existence in West Berlin were issued until 1995 in the building opposite the lock Charlottenburg.

Museum for Islamic art

With the opening of the Bode museum 1904 a department for Islamic art was created, which was paged out with the opening of the Pergamonmuseums 1930 as own museum into the new building.

Beside works of art of Islamic peoples between Spain and India from that 8. to in 19. Century is the point of main attraction the Mschatta front, which comes from an earlyIslamic desert lock and was given from the osmanischen Sultan II. the emperor Wilhelm II. This very day parts of the lock torn off for the building of the Bagdad course are on area of the airport of Amman in Jordanian ones. A further piece of splendor is the Aleppo room.

Frontasiatic museum

In the frontasiatic museum exhibits from archaeological excavations of German scientists, among other things the German Orient society, were shown, those within the range of the sumerischen, Babylonian and assyrischen advanced cultures were excavated. In addition count many monumental architectural monuments, reliefs and also smaller cult, decoration and utensils.

Special point of attraction is the Babylonian Ischtar gate, a part of the process ion road lain before it as well as the throne hall front Nebukadnezar II.

Master plan museum island

In the context of the master plan citizen of Berlin museum island the Pergamonmuseum is to be developed to a center of the ensemble, since it attractively to the new museum, the Bodemuseum, which can be tied up old persons national gallery and the new entrance building.

In the year 2000 for the change work an architectural competition was written out, which the Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers won. After its plans the building is to be reorganized. Because of the heavy interferences, which Ungers plans to a large extent into those since 1930 invariably received original substance of the Pergamonmuseums, the plans of Ungers are disputed. The existing entrance building in the honour yard from the 1980er years is to be replaced by an abstracted Portikus and be closed the yard so far open to the south by a fourth wing.

The connection to the other museum buildings is to be made by one to a large extent in the base projectiles running archaeological promenade. Also this is disputed because of the costs and the educational concept. The Pergamonmuseum is in sections reorganized starting from 2008 for an indefinite time. The financing is not at present secured.
