St.Moritz church in Augsburg is considered as one the oldest Kirchbauten in the Bavarian large city. It was established 1019 under Augsburger bishop Bruno.

The building

In the year 1019 Augsburger bishop Bruno let establish to the Maximilianstrasse a church building and baptized it after the protection patron pc. Moritz. To its time of origin however it stayed in shade its. The two other large Kirchbauten the high cathedral and the Basilika St.Ulrich and Afra were substantially more largely and more remarkably built.

After a collapse in 14. Century was this time more largely rebuilt the St.Moritz somewhat. In the 15.Jahrhundert the bell tower was increased and converted. In the year 1510 the rich banker Jakob Fugger acquired the church. In this time also the west choir of the pc. Moritz church was torn off.

With the help of the duke Albrecht V. was restored the religious building. Then 1714 the church in the style of the baroque was converted.

In 2. World war was completely destroyed with an air raid on 24 February 1944 the pc. Moritz church up to the foundation walls. The church was rebuilt with some changes from 1946 to 1949 by the church architect Dominikus

The St.Moritz church - today

In today's Augsburg the St.Moritz church has an inconspicuous meaning. It is because of the Moritzplatz designated after it directly at the southern end of the pedestrian precinct before one right into the magnificent Maximilianstrasse turns. A reason why it is inconspicuous, the place, between the two enormous churches high cathedral and St.Ulrich, and between department stores. In addition a majority of the front is covered by the stop "“Moritzplatz"”. Here the city Augsburg built a parking orbit yard for the streetcar and bus guests.
