The Basilika pc. Martin is the main church of Amberg.
The church has a length of 72 m and width of 20,5 M. the publicly accessible tower has a height of nearly 92 M.
The church which was because of the south side of the market place starting from 1421 by the Amberger citizen in the gothic then current in Germany was established. The design is a dreischiffige resounding church with a common roof. The church is surrounded by a wreath/ring by 19 chapels, which are locked upward by a common loft. From the design pc. became Martin model for many churches in the Saxonian mining district.
Few decades after the completion were held here in the context of the reformation starting from 1544 of Protestant services. 1557 worked on arrangement of the cure prince Ottheinrich of the Pfalz the Kalvinisten as and eliminated the and Bildwerke. Later one eliminated the church completely and destroyed also still the Fresken.
After the Gegenreformation received the church a new baroque high altar with a painting from Gaspar de Crayer, to a pupil from Peter Paul Rubens. After damage by bombardment 1703 in Spanish succession war with destruction of the old Glasfenster the church received precious baroque equipment. 1720 received the tower its current form.
The today's Glasfenster as well as the again-gothical equipment originates from a restoration from the end 19. Century. Since 2003 a comprehensive renovation particularly runs the roof framing.
Because of its meaning for the region pc. Martin received 1980 by Pope Johannes Paul II. the honour title of a Basilica minor.
