The gothical resounding church pc. Johannes (or simply Johanneskirche) is the most important and largest church in new market in the Upper Palatinate. It belongs as catholic church to the Dekanat new market and thus to the diocese The 72 meters high tower coins/shapes the silhouette of the old part of town.

Description

The Johanneskirche lies in the center of the old part of town in direct proximity of the city hall. It stands on a relatively small church square by the parsonage building, the Hallertorstrasse, for the green tree landlord lane and the city hall is limited. It consists to a large extent of sandstone, which was broken in the closer environment and to which it owes its remarkable, reddish colour.

The church building has a length of 58 meters (from west to east) and is 22 meters wide. The outside walls rise into 18 meters height, whereupon the 16 meters high roof framing follows. The tower over the west portal is squarely constructed, only over the gallery follows an octagonal essay, which continues in the point. Its height amounts to 72 meters, it is thereby the highest church tower in the diocese

For the church its consistent asymmetry, those is salient is typical for buildings of churches of this time. The main ship exhibits a break northward and also in the interior was paid attention to break geometrical forms open again and again. This is for example particularly noticeable at the bracings in the choir area.

History

In place of the today's Johanneskirche already existed a building of predecessors, which disappeared today however completely. Its remnants are to be assumed under the today's church. Their consecration is registered in the annals of diocese in the year 1190.

Grundsteinlegung and building

The building of the Johanneskirche as catholic place of worship falls, just like the building of the yard church and the residence, into the reign of Pfalzgraf Johann, which resided from 1410 to 1443 in new market. Exact data to the construction period or even to the building master are not well-known, it give however some reference points:

  • a dendrochronologische age determination of the bars of the roof framing puts near that these trees probably in the winter 1406/1407 pleases became
  • Franz Seraph Seel, which led the Johanneskirche from 1853 to 1874, strove also much to reconstruct the history of the place of worship. It indicates a Grundsteinlegung for the year 1404, the completion took place to 1432.

The building was therefore still begun, before Johann drew into new market. It lies however near that the Pfalzgraf well-known as building masters promoted also the building of the Johanneskirche substantially.

Execution and shape of the church give reason to the assumption that two building masters (probably successively) led the building. Some arranged rather delicate and soberly the west half of the church with the tower and oriented itself thereby also at the building of predecessors. Above all the tower exhibits a remarkable similarity to the towers of the Lorenz church. The second building master appeared then responsible for the eastern half with the choir area, which is substantially more distinguished and more magnificently arranged.

After its completion the Johanneskirche had an organ 12 altars, and also. It was verziert with numerous painting, mosaic windows and sculptures.

Of 15. Century until today

The Johanneskirche heavy destruction had to put already 70 years in after their completion. When in the Landshuter imperial troops new market 1504 besieged succession war, above all the tower under bombardment was taken, since it was merged already in this time into the defense system of the city. Thus there the with its family, which had to perform also different other activities apart from ringing the bells, lived among other things also look out stops after house fires also to 1908.

Friedrich II., which resided from 1520 to 1540 in new market, professed itself ever more to the reformation and introduced finally also the spreading of the Evangelist church in new market. The next 100 years were coined/shaped by a steady change of the religious teachings, depending upon that whether the respective Pfalzgraf was straight Lutheraner or Calvinist. In this time naturally gradually also all catholic art articles had to be removed and destroyed from the church.

Only as Maximilian of Bavaria 1628 received and the Upper Palatinate thereby at Bavaria went, interspersed themselves the catholic theory again in new market, even if only briefly. Because already 1633 became new market again Evangelist, when Swedish troops in the process of the war occupied the city and took off only 1635 again. The same repeated itself again from 1646 to 1649. Afterwards new market remained finally in Bavarian possession and concomitantly catholic.

Native craftsmen made themselves now to arrange the interior in the style of the baroque. Among the Bavarian kings Ludwig I. and Ludwig II. began a phase of the back meditation on old person and its re-establishment. Minister Seel was responsible for the fact that the church was released during a renovation completely from the baroque and furnished again in the style of the neo-gothic style. Further changes took place 1928 and 1934.

In the Second World War new market was heavily destroyed on 22 April 1945 with American air raids. Also the Johanneskirche suffered substantial damages, stopped however. It was fast again repaired and reconditioned in the years 1964 to 1966 completely. The final repairs and the production of the today's interior and external condition took place then 1972 and particularly from 1987 to 1995, where large parts of the external facades and the interior were restored.
