History

With its first mention 1255 pc. Jacobi was still another small chapel outside of the Stadtmauern, at the first fastened way, the stone route. Only after extension of the Stadtmauer 1260 it was included into that Hamburg cities.

Between 1350 and about 1400 one replaced her by a dreischiffige resounding church in the gothical style, similarly to the pc. Petri, and cultivated approx. 100 years later, as with that one, a fourth church ship at the south side. The cultivation of vestry in the northeast originates also from this time (1438) and is today of Hamburg only certification gothical everyday architecture.

Second, 1826/27 established polygonal spire fell together with other parts of the church building to the Second World War to the victim. The historical interior equipment could be saved. 1963 were pc. Jacobi after medieval model - with modern polygonal spire - restored.

Equipment

The famous Arp Schnitger organ of 1693 on the west loft is with their 60 registers and approx. 4,000 whistles the largest received baroque organ in the northEuropean area. In the time of 1989 to 1993 she was fundamentally restored and is since its festive reinauguration Easter 1993 each Sunday in the service to be heard.

Pc. Jacobi contains three medieval altars: the pc. - Trinitatis altar in the main choir (around 1518), the pc. - Petri altar in the first south ship (1508) and from that Hamburg the Mariendom coming pc. - Lukas altar in 2. South ship (around 1500).

Attention earns also the gentleman hall, which originally served as library. Since 1543 it was meeting hall of the Kirchherren and received to 1710 new equipment. The cover paintings with citizen virtues point to the meaning of the Kirchspielverwaltung for the city regiment and come like the landscape paintings at the walls from Johann Moritz Riesenberger.
