The Palmaille is a road in Hamburg Altona. It belongs to the oldest roads of the city.
The Palmaille was set 1638, in the middle in the war, on the Elbhang of the holsteinischen place Altona, which got 1664 lent by the Danish king municipal rights; at that time the Palmaille still lay outside of the cultivated area, toward the Vogtei Ottensen.
Their name it owes to the Croquet used, liked to Italian ball play of the early modern times named Palla A maglio (French Pallmail, Dutch Palmalie or Palmaille, English Pall Mall); the national gentleman at that time count Otto V. of looking castle let put on for it a several hundred meters long, even play course, which was bepflanzt laterally with altogether 400 lime trees and at their ends of two iron gate elbows stood, by which one the wood ball with a racquet to float had. The count came however no longer for a long time into the benefit of his favourite play, since he suddenly and young deceased to 1640.
Afterwards the plant purged first, of Seilmachern than work and storage space for their long ropes was partly used and partly also cultivated. After the "Sweden fire" of 1713 let plant the upper president of the city, Christian Detlev by Reventlow, 1717 at the Palmaille four lime tree rows and put on reciprocally drives, in order to create a "public avenue"; in addition it must have "gentle pressure" for some basic owners, so that they gave their properties against remuneration.
Since the end 18. Century developed along the road reciprocally predominantly representative buildings; in particular the buildings, the klassizistische Danish architect Christian Frederik Hansen let which establish here around 1800, coin/shape the face of this splendour road. 1823 furnished the Danish yard astronomer and Heinrich Christian Schumacher into the Palmaille 9 the observatory Altona. The observatory was operated to 1871, the building was destroyed 1941 with a bomb attack.
1905 became those nearly 200 years old lime trees pleases; by Nachpflanzung in the meantime (however only double-row) sheet roof over the broad auto-free center strip curves. And behind the beautiful fronts only few dwellings are, for it numerous company headquarters.
Nowadays the Palmaille a vierspurige main street, which Hamburg city center, past at Altonas fish market and the city hall, which in former times a station serves the connection that were, is, with which Elbchaussee direction Blankenese.
