Paignton is a coastal town to the "English Riviera" in close proximity to Torquay in the southwest of England.
Paignton belonged in former times to the county Devonian, since 1997 is it however part of the administratively independent Unitary Authority Torbay. In the course of the years Paignton and Torquay grew in such a way that the two cities appear like one. Paignton has 47,500 inhabitants (2004).
Paignton, for which in history different names are proven (Paington, are Paynton, Payington and Paignton), in the Domesday Book as agony clay/tone registered. Since 1837 Paignton is the official name. Probably the area was settled first times around 700. It is accepted that the name comes from the farm OF Paega's people.
1856 were attached Paignon to the railway. 1874 build the US-American sewing machine producer Isaac Singer the old Mansion; 1923 were opened the zoo by Paignton, which ranks this very day among the most important objects of interest and which is third biggest zoo of England.
Up to 19. Century was Paignton a fishing village. In 19. Century was built a new port. The tourism increased at the same time considerably in this time. Consequently in Paignton a long jetty was built for 236 m, in order to offer the tourist entertainment possibilities. Also today the tourism is the main source of income Paigntons.
A routistic attraction is the railway after Kingswear/Dartmouth with viaduct and tunnel, which are continued using now as steam railway.
