The old person castle with Bamberg was mentioned 1109 for the first time documentary, served first as fleeing castle and from 1305 to 1553 as residence of the Bamberger of prince bishops.

History

In the second Mark count war of 1553 the castle by the war army of the Mark count Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg Kulmbach up to the foundation walls were down-burned.

1801 acquired the Bamberger physician Adalbert Friedrich Marcus the purged castle and had it by reason on restored. E.T.A. Hoffmann, who was friendly with Marcus, felt so tightened by the castle that he established himself for longer time in one of the wall towers.

1818 took over an association the preservation of the old person castle. Today a restaurant in the castle, which manages also the so-called knight's hall, is. This is used gladly for festive meetings such as weddings or donation celebrations.

Into the 1970er years inside in a kennel on the old person castle a brown bear, the Poldi in such a way specified was held.

In his travel guide over Bamberg and environment from the time around the year 1912 the author Dietrich Amende describes also the old person castle:

"“The old person castle is the landmark Bambergs. Their slim tower greets far away into the Frankish country. It stands on a mountain cone at the edge the riser forest height. Together with the lock opposite visible on the law height Giech controlled it in past centuries the Main level. "“
