The old person castle lies about two kilometers to the west of new castle on the southern steep bank of the Danube in Upper Bavaria. From the high-medieval castle plant still wall remainders kept and the deep neck ditch.
The castle became probably toward end 10. Century establishes. To this first weir system the impressive neck ditch decreases/goes back, which was partly brick-lined later.
1007 are called in a document Heinrichs II. a Kemenate of its castle "Nouumburg ". This new castle is probably the old person castle, which kept this name only later for the distinction from the settlement on the city mountain and the lock.
1197 assigned Heinrich VI. the office new castle with the castle as Lehen to his marshal Heinrich von Kalden (pasteboard home), whose sex probably placed the castle counts von Neuburg already before.
While the "Meraner the Wittelsbacher the Veste, which was destroyed again 1386 in the war Bayerns against the Rhine federation, conquered feud" (1246/47).
The castle was not any longer developed thereafter. Starting from 1597 one exploited the ruin as quarry for the new building of the tower of the yard church.
1818 came the old person castle as gift of the Bavarian king to the city new castle, which had to commit itself in response to the preservation of the architectural monument.
The castle place is separated by one - up to 15 m deep - arc-shaped neck ditch from the which is rotated by an edge barrier. This ditch surely goes on the predecessor castle 10. Century back. Still another broad, shallow external ditch is pre-aged to the edge barrier, which continues at the steep rock slope at half height as Berme. In the west the Berme ends however today at the Steilabbruch of a large Materialgrube. Such double ditch systems with slope ditches and Bermen are typical for weir systems Hungary and after-Hungary-temporal time position.
The oval (approx. 100 x 50 m) castle plateau is sign wall-like towered above in the west by the high external walls of the main building. On the inside numerous bar holes of the former projectile organization are visible. The openings on the exterior are however Into these recesses with the building bars were pushed, which served as stand carriers.
Two large and some smaller (partly added) break through the brick-work, which - like the remaining castle remainders - was however strongly restored. From the partition walls only the foundations remained.
North the square donjon lay over the ditch, the few wall remainders again about a half meter was highly up-bricked. Of the northwest auxiliary buildings still the basements tell. The existence was strongly changed however by the preservation measures.
In the north and the east the core castle is kennel-like rotated by a broad terrace. Of the Ummauerung are only small remainders to be seen, in the east lay an inward open bastion or Tora situation. Here still some few embossment right parallelepipeds with edge impact kept.
