The new residence in Bamberg was the former seat of the Bamberger of prince bishops.

History

The new residence developed with its four-bladed allocation in two sections.

As the first under prince bishop Johann Philipp of Gebsattel starting from 1602 the rear douple swing part in the Renaissance style was built. Thereupon under prince bishop Lothar Franz was developed by beautiful fount by Johann Leonhard Dientzenhofer between 1697 and 1703 the front baroque part.

Today the complex from sandstone accommodates the state library and state gallery of Bamberg.

From the rose garden of the new residence one has a view of the Michaelskirche and the roofs of the citizen city.

State library

State gallery

The state gallery in the new residence is a branch gallery of the Bavarian state painting collections. To the most famous paintings to the collection Hans Baldung Griens painting "“the Sintflut"” belongs.
