The castle, the landmark of the city Nuremberg, thront on a sandstone back north above the old part of town and consists among other things of the emperor castle and the castle count castle. From the castle one has a wonderful view on old part of town after the damages in the Second World War the plant in historical forms was rebuilt and is one of the most important art and architectural monuments the city Nuremberg.

Overview

Possession-historically the castle consists of three parts; however the borders of these three ranges in the today's building existence are to be read off only with trouble:

  • The remainders of the castle count castle with the pentagon tower are in the center.
  • The emperor castle with sense waving tower, deep well, double chapel and Palas - to call over only some these buildings - expands to the west.
  • Further (realm) urban buildings lie in the north and the east (e.g. the former Kaiserstallung of Hans Beheim and the tower "„peeping in country "“).

Today the building is to primarily routistic purposes at the disposal. In addition, individual buildings are temporarily used as living, office or museum buildings as well as for celebrations and state receptions.

Historical

One can connect archaeologically proven foundations, which are to be dated the year ago 1000, with no written messages. Also in the document from the year 1050 (emperor Heinrich III.), in which Nuremberg is for the first time mentioned, gives it no express reference to the castle. 1105 emerge the castle in the sources. Between 1050 and 1571 were all emperors and kings of the holy Roman realm here. Already 1140 began king Konrad III. with the building of a second castle, which should serve as emperor residence. In the course of the realm-urban self-sufficiency, Nuremberg in 13. Century attained, the castle of the Obhut of the city was transferred. With the realm-urban buildings the tower peeping in country, which was begun 1377, protrudes enormously.

With the sayful jump its Rosses into the castle ditch escaped the robbery knight Eppelein of Gailingen ("† 1381) from its execution at the Galgen.

Building-preserving measures began 19 in the second quarter. Century; to call in particular the work of Carl Alexander Heideloff is, August von Voit and August Essenwein.Im the Second World War suffered the castle 1944/45 heavy damages; only the double chapel remained nearly intact. In the post-war period all building groups in the historical forms restored, so for example also that in the war completely destroyed peeping in country; however one did without it, the adding 19. Century, which 1934/35 had been partially eliminated to reconstruct. The former Kaiserstallung is today furnished as youth hostel.

Archaeological investigations

Excavations in the Burghof proved traces of human settlement in the last years for the time 1000 ago. The foundation of a round tower with a wall thickness was excavated by two meters, to which according to data of the national office for care of monuments likewise before 1000 one established. The investigations still persist 2005.

As secured now the realization is considered that itself the castle already in the 11. Century from the east to the west completely over the castle mountain extended; further the thesis has existence that at least since that 12. Century of the actual castle of the emperor the castle count castle was east latch plate-like pre-aged.

The double chapel with the eastern choir tower (Margarethenturm, also"” heath tower "“) probably originated in in the second quarter 13. Century and building decoration shows in the forms of the late Romanesque.

Rundgang

From the city one has "„the sky gate coming been normally because of the oil mountain "“left and goes to far the rise highly, on which former Kaiserstallung (today youth hostel) too, at whose east end "„the peeping in country "“highly rises. In order to arrive at the castle, one turns to the left before the Kaiserstallung (to the west) at the five-angular tower by and can, before one passes the first gate, which visit rising Walpurgiskapelle from the outside over the steep rock slope.

one then the first gate, must one again orient to the left (straightforward one arrives at the ditch on the north side) and reaches myself "„the Freiung "“, from which the old part of town and in clear weather also the eastern, southern and western city accomodation is well to be grasped. Of the Freiung continues to pass through the round way the Burgtor under "„the secret guard course "“. The gate right the powerful round sense waving tower piles up itself right after up, which one can enter in the context of a guidance; likewise the entrance is possible for depths also to the well. On the left are the Himmelsstallung and also "„the sky gate "“, by which one can enter usually the Burghof. If one continues to go toward the west toward the internal Burgtor, then one goes past completely near at the double chapel with the heath tower.

From the internal Burghof one has admission to "„the emperor castle in the context of a guidance "“, while the castle museum is to be visited as branch of the Germanic national museum separately.

With the way back one can look at oneself possibly before the surveyed auxiliary buildings. Also one should not be able to be escaped to go northward over the ditch in order to be able to be impressed from the power of the Basteien.

If one wants to let the way become an expanded Rundgang, then one goes outside at the Stadtmauer up to the animal gardner gate, where one can in the summer period by the wall through the castle garden enter. The castle garden extends at the north side of the castle to nearly again to the five-angular tower. There the investigation route finally ends.

In the proximity of the castle is the Albrecht house.
