The national gallery in Berlin is a collection of art 19. and 20. Century in the context of the national museums to Berlin of the donation Prussian culture possession. It was created 1861 from cause of a donation of the banker Johann Heinrich Wagener and should serve the collection of modern art. 1876 drew the collection into those at that time newly built national gallery, the today's old person national gallery.

The collection continual became larger in the course of the time by additional purchase and further donations. Starting from 1919 Ludwig Justi in the Kronprinzenpalais furnished a gallery for modern art. 1937 was seized about 500 works of this collection as degenerate art. In the Second World War the collections were paged out to the protection from bombs and the building of the national gallery was destroyed. The existence were divided. To the war a part of the existence was pointed in the rebuilt national gallery on the museum island. The parts of the collection remained in West Berlin were shown starting from 1968 in the newly built new national gallery on the cultural forum.

After the German reunification also the divided existence of the national gallery were again united and partly again arranged. Due to its extent the collection is today divided on five museum buildings. While the art 19. Century in the old person national gallery and art 20. Century from the classical modern trend to the art of the 1960er years in the new national gallery, is the present art is accommodated in Hamburg station, that 1996 created museum for present - Berlin to see. In the museum mountain-green in the western opposite the lock Charlottenburg is the collection Heinz mountain-green, a collection of works Pablo Picassos and other artist of the classical modern trend. Sculptures early 19. Century are issued in the Friedrichswerder church. A part of the existence of the national gallery, for example the GDR art, also today still is from lack of space in the depots.
