The MAK - Austrian museum for applied art/present art understands itself as model collection for art and industry. In the case of its establishment it did not have yet own collections. The existence resulted through from producer deductions, collections of samples and order assignment. The variety of the today's existence resulted from the most different sources of origin. The carpet collection and the ornamentation ticking collection are world-famous. In addition one finds industrial model material of historicism.

The objects are arranged according to materials groups and not according to epochs and style directions. Archives of the Viennese workshops, the department for present art and the Eastern Asia collection represent an exception in addition.

Those regularly special exhibitions encounter usually gosses interest of visitor.

In the museum there is also the MAK to cafe and the MAK Design Shop.

History

  • 1863 establishment "„k.k. Austrian museum for art and industry "“(usually only called "„Austrian museum "“) to 7. March after efforts of many years Rudolf Eitelbergers by emperors Franz Joseph on initiative of his brother ore duke Rainer. Rudolf of Eitelberger, first professor for history of art at the University of Vienna, is ordered to the director. The museum essentially follows the model 1852 created South of the Kensington museum (today Victoria & Albert Museum) in London and is to serve as model collection for artists, Industrielle and public and as out and training further place for designers and craftsmen.
  • 1864 to 12. May is opened the museum in the ball house of the yard castle.
  • 1865-1897 the magazine published from the museum "„memo healings of the k. k. Austrian museum for art and industry "“appears.
  • 1866-1871 establishment of a new building at the room ring after the plans of Heinrich Ferstel.
  • 1867 establishment "„k.k. College of arts and crafts k.k. Austrian museum for art and industry "“
  • 1868 opening "„of the college of arts and crafts "“in the former Gewehrfabrik in the road 11-13/black Spaniard route 17 (today the 1886 newly built "„anatomical Institut "“). Thus are united theoretical and practical training. It took place a consistent - spatial and institutional - separation from artistic and art-commercial training.
  • 1871 on 15 November are opened the new "„Austrian museum for art and industry "“at the room ring 5. There the objects can be set up permanently and arranged according to material emphasis. Also the college of arts and crafts pulls into this house.
  • 1873 world exhibition in Vienna.
  • 1875-1877 establishment of an adjacent new building at the room ring 3, likewise after the plans of Heinrich Ferstel.
  • 1877 the new building bordering on the museum "„the college of arts and crafts "“one opens to that.
  • 1897 Arthur von Scala, up to then director "„of the k. k. Eastern museum "“(late commercial museum), the line of the museum for art and industry takes over and wins Otto Wagner, Felician of Myrbach, Koloman Moser, Josef Hoffmann and Alfred scooter as a coworker of the museum and the college of arts and crafts.

  • 1907 the museum for art and industry take over the majority of the collection of the k. k. Austrian commercial museum.
  • 1909 separation from college of arts and crafts and museum. The extension building of the museum in the Weiskirchnerstrasse is opened.
  • 1919 after establishment of the first republic come it to assignments from formerly habsburgischem possession to the museum, e.g. from eastern carpets.
  • 1936 and 1940 in the exchange with the art-historical museum the museum delivers at the room ring a part of the sculptures and takes over the antique collection and art-commercial existence of the collection Figdor and the art-historical museum.
  • 1938 after the connection of Austria to the German Reich are renamed the museum into "“national museum of arts and crafts in Vienna"”.
  • 1939-1945 the museums takes over numerous private seized collections. Also the collections of the "“national museum of arts and crafts in Vienna"” become larger in this way. Since 1998 can be returned due to the provenance research numerous collections.
  • 1947 the "“national museum of arts and crafts in Vienna"” are renamed into "“Austrian museum for applied art"”.
  • 1949 reopening of the museum after recovery of the war damage.
  • 1955-1985 the museum publish the magazine "“old and modern art"”.
  • 1965 the become branch office of the museum.
  • 1986 Peter Noever are ordered to the director. Beginning of the collection present art.
  • 1989 beginning of the overall renovation of the old buildings and building of a zweigeschossigen low memory. A generous depot for the collection and the additional exhibition surfaces develop.
  • 1993 the museum open after the change also of artists arranged looking halls. The building in the Weiskirchnerstrasse is changing exhibitions reserved. The halls at the room ring accommodate the permanent looking collection, the study collection and the MAK gallery.
  • 1994 the Gefechtsturm arene mountain park branch office of the MAK becomes.
  • 1995 the MAK create the branch office MAK center for kind and Architecture in Los Angeles, in the Rudolph M. Schindler House and in the Pearl M. Mackey House.
  • 2000 the museum become scientific institute of public right.
  • 2001-2002 the project CAT (Contemporary kind Tower) are introduced to New York, Los Angeles, Moscow and Berlin in Vienna.

Building

One established in the years 1866-1871 at the room ring 5 after the plans by Heinrich Ferstel in in the Renaissance style. It was thereby the first museum building at the ring.
