The museum Folkwang is an important art collection in meals. It was given 1899 in Hagen by the local resident Karl Ernst Osthaus in order, in order to oppose in this "„large city of the west "“of the centralization of cultural values in the realm capital Berlin a counterweight.

Establishment in Hagen

Continuation in meals

In meals the Folkwang museum fused 1906 created Essener art museum in the year 1922 with that and firmiert since then under the name museum Folkwang.

In the 30's the museum could round the French existence off (predominant Impressionisten) by purposeful purchases of German painting and plastics, so that already before the outstanding call of the collection experienced still further international acknowledgment.

The art politics of Germany during the time of the national socialism destroyed this work. In the year 1937 59 paintings were seized, and with a further seizure action in the context of the action "„"“the museum lost degenerate art over 1000 works of art. Thus the museum did not possess a work of art from that 20. Century more.

The museum could be opened only 1960 destroyed in the Second World War again. Since a part from the Vorkriegszeit still received works of art of foreign museums were redeemed and historical collection existence were restored, today no longer much is to be felt by the setbacks of the 1930er and 1940er years.

Beside the painting collection there is still in each case a graphic and photographic collection, which independent departments form. While the graphic collection predominantly concentrates on works of the German expressionism, the photographic collection orients itself internationally. It covers among other things the deductions of Helmar Lerski, Germaine Krull, Otto Steinert and Peter Keetman.
