The museum Folkwang is an important art collection in meals. It was given 1899 in Hagen by the local resident Karl Ernst Osthaus in order, in order to oppose in this "„large city of the west "“of the centralization of cultural values in the realm capital Berlin a counterweight.

The museum could be opened only 1960 destroyed in the Second World War again. Beside the painting collection there is still in each case a graphic and photographic collection, which independent departments form. While the graphic collection predominantly concentrates on works of the German expressionism, the photographic collection orients itself internationally. It covers among other things the deductions of Helmar Lerski, Germaine Krull, Otto Steinert and Peter Keetman.
