The lock Aufsess is at the western edge of the Aufsesstales above the locality of the same name. Oberaufsess is a local part of the municipality Aufsess in the west of the district Bayreuth.

The lock consists of a residential building at the southeast corner and former farm buildings. The entire plant is surrounded by an outside wall, which is strengthened by four round towers at the corners. The gate building is on the north side of the plant. At the blunt-angular south side is a further - bastion-like more developed - tower.

History

The name Oberaufsess is mentioned for the first time in a document from the year 1326. The name refers however not to a castle, but only to the area.

In the year 1676 the castle Aufsess - later also Unteraufsess mentioned - comes to the brothers Friedrich and Karl Heinrich of Aufsess. Due to disputes among these two brothers lets the lock Oberaufsess build Karl Heinrich of Aufsess starting from 1690. With the plant it concerns for this time a relatively strongly fastened lock. 1692 tries Bamberger troops in vain to conquer the lock.

The lock is today still property of the Mr. von Aufsess and serves the family as domicile.
