The light castle is a cinema in meals. It was opened on 18 October 1928. With 1.250 places the light castle possesses the largest (and, as many say, also most beautiful) cinema hall in Germany. The canvas is roll upable, behind it is a stage, so that the hall can be used also for meetings. The building stands under monument protection.

The light castle was strongly damaged 1943 during the allied bomb attacks on meals. The cinema hall was again established after the war in the clear stylistic idiom of the early fifties. During and the sixties fifties the light castle was the most important premiere cinema in Germany. Among the premiere guests at that time (beside many different) Romy are cutter, Zarah Leander, Jean Marais, Heinz to find Buster Keaton and Gary Cooper. As meeting hall the light castle saw artists such as Louis Armstrong, COUNT Basie or Juliette Greco.

With the arising of the television in the middle of the sixties all cinemas came in Germany into difficulties. The light castle could keep itself still good into the eighties due to its size however. 1991 opened, likewise in meals, the largest multiplex cinema of Germany, the CinemaxX. At this time the numbers of visitors (as technical valid becomes outdated at that time) of the light castle substantial broke. Since in the middle of the nineties was repeated threatened from the locking the light castle. The complex, in which the light castle is, was besides strongly renovation-needily, so that by the Essener land agency a use for new purposes of the building was planned as pure meeting theatre. The protest of the Essener citizenry and also of prominent ones like Wim of Wenders and Wolfgang Niedecken led then however to the council decision to receive the light castle as cinema.

After one year's, sieved millions euro an expensive renovation phase the light castle, now with modern technology, was equipped to 16. March 2003 again-opens. Additionally to the large hall a further, was accommodated smaller cinema in the basement the Sabu.
