The light castle is a castle in Seitenroda with Kahla in Thuringia. It lies on a far away visible mountain cone on a height of 395 m over NN.

History

On 15 April 1221 the castle the first time was mentioned documentary.

Beside the Lobdeburg became the light castle the most important base of the gentlemen von Lobdeburg with the raid after southeast and the upper Saale.

1313 must pawn the Mr. von Lobdeburg, who had strongly been to blame for themselves in the meantime, the castle to the counts von Schwarzburg and sell them to 1333 finally to these. After the Schwarzburger was weakened by the count feud, it succeeded to conquer the Wettinern the castle 1392 and to force in the Leipziger contract 1396 the Schwarzburger to finally sell the castle to her.

Under the Wettinern the castle becomes seat of an office administration of the wettinischen villages of the environment. After the defeat of the cure prince Johann Friedrich of the in the Schmalkaldi war the castle served the wife and the children of the cure prince as place of refuge.

Since 1612 are used a tower of the castle as prison. 1700 are shifted the administration of the office after Kahla. In the course of the landing hurrying under the Ernestinern the castle fell 1724 to the duchy Saxonia Coburg Altenburg, 1826 at Saxonia old person castle with that it to 1920 to remain should. In this time the change of the castle began to a penintentiary.

The penintentiary existed until 1871 as it was dissolved and the last prisoners after Zeitz shifted. Afterwards the light castle served as hotel and museum. 1921 were opened in it a youth hostel. Since 1963 the castle accommodates museum.
