The Liechtenstein museum in Vienna (district when suppl. approximately, prince lane 1) became in the today's form to 29. March 2004 opens. In the areas of the baroque palace Liechtenstein the private art collection of the prince house Liechtenstein is issued, one of the largest private collections of the world.

Building

1687 acquired prince Johann Adam Andreas of Liechtenstein a garden with neighbouring meadows of the count Weikhard von Auersperg in the Rossau (Vienna) Rossau. In the southern part of property the prince let a palace establish, in the north created he a brewery and a basic rule, from which the suburb light valley developed. For the building of the palace a competition started from Liechtenstein 1688, in which among other things also the young Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach participated. Its little functional "“permeable"” project was however rejected by the prince, instead it was allowed however nevertheless to build a garden Belvedere in that 14 for the when hereditary oh road, which was broken off however 1872.

The competition went at Domenico Egidio Rossi, which was however already replaced to 1692 by Domenico Martinelli. A mixture from city and country house in the Roman style, a Palazzo in mansion was built. The arrangement is very blockful clear and the building method with a stressed Mittelrisaliten, as it came to meet the conservative taste of the prince. According to the regulation of the architecture treatise of Johann Adam Andreas' father, Karl Eusebius the palace was implemented and with 13 window axles at the main and/or seven window axles at the Seitenfront. Together with the porches it forms an honour yard.

1700 were completed the carcass. For the pictorial equipment the Bologneser Marcantonio Franceschini was originally engaged, from which some ceiling paintings in the first stick come. Since it was too slow the prince, Antonio Belucci from Venice was engaged, which painted the remainder of the floor. The cover painting generally speaking festival room (the Herkulessaal) procured however Andrea Pozzo. Since these artists died however (Pozzo) or to Italy back went, the prince had now no painter for the ground floor.

After longer search Johann Michael Rottmayr for painting the ground floor was finally engaged - originally a since the prince of the opinion was that only Italian artists would have buon gusto d'invenzione. Since Rottmayr had not been involved into original planning, its painting fits not completely with the stucco work.

The plastic equipment procured Giovanni Giuliani, the stucco work Santino Bussi.

Garden

The garden was put on in the sense of a classical baroque garden. The vases and statues were implemented after plans by Giuseppe Mazza by local resident Giovanni Giuliani. Around 1820 it was transformed after plans by Joseph in the klassizistischen sense. In the prince lane opposite the palace was the 1700 delighted Orangerie.

Collection

Collection covers paintings and plastics from four centuries, whereby the emphasis - which Ambiente of the building accordingly - on the baroque age is, particularly on the work of Peter Paul Rubens. The time frame goes however from the Renaissance to the conventional Meier. In the ground floor also the splendor car of the prince Johann Adam Andreas is issued, with whom it traveled on diplomatic mission to Paris.

With the collection it concerns one of the largest and most valuable private art collections of the world, whose main base however still is in Vaduz (Liechtenstein). Like the palace, then also the collection is in the possession of the donation prince Liechtenstein.
