The Khaosan Road was built during the reign by king Chulalongkorn. On an old map from 1921 one can already constitute some wooden firms at both sides of the road. Its name Khaosan comes from the commodity, which was mainly sold here in former times: ungekochter rice.
Admits became it since center of the 1980er years by its popularity with backpack tourists. The road is of a multiplicity of overnight accomodations, taverns, restaurants, second-hand bookshops, Massschneidereien, street traders, and travel agencies. Increasingly wholesale dealers for silver decoration settle, who sell only at dealers. Accordingly the face of the road changes strongly. The rents rise rapidly, so that many old-established enterprises must to close and make place for branches of large chains such as McDonalds. Many Backpackerhostels recondition and become middle class hotels. Meanwhile there are some hotels, which have even a Swimmingpool.
