To make possible named holidays periods, in which a mechanism closes completely, in order their member other activities, in particular recovery. To differentiate they are from the vacation, which is granted only in each case individual members of the mechanism.

The most important case are the vacations, in which no instruction or other school meetings, however a minimum of organizational enterprise takes place are maintained. Date is usually the time around Easter, around Whitsuntide, the high summer, the time around all-holy as well as after Christmas. Vacations represent the only period, in which sick leave may be granted to the instructors.

At universities there can be term holidays, in which no training meetings or examinations are accomplished. Whereas in the lecture-free time, which has each university (except vocational academies), meetings, examinations and or practical courses to take place can.

Holiday season is rarer, in which in the entire enterprise the line one does not work when desired. Relatively frequently they are in industries subject to seasonal influences as for instance the Hotelerie. Finally there are court holidays, while those only particularly important or urgent procedures are operated. In the recesses the activity of the legislation organ rests.

Word origin

"“Holidays"” feriae originates (= holidays, celebrations) from latin from. With respect to the Middle Ages and with respect to the early modern times one differentiated between a set of different "“holidays"”: "“feriae sacrae"”, "“feriae profanae"” and further holidays, on which the public life (courts, treaty negotiations, Universities of, schools, etc.) rested.

Since 1521 the word is specified in the realm order under "“business-free days"” (first in the Gerichtswesen). Starting from 1749, with which introduction of the "“vacations"”, also "“instruction-free days"” become thereby designation. Of the end 19. Century on the word becomes also synonymously with vacation (mhd. urloup = permission for going to permission uses parting) for the interruption of work of the employees workers.

In former times holidays were called also Vakanzen, what from French "“les vacances"”, or also from the English "“vacation"” originates.
