A geo park is to help to recognize the inheritance geologic history. The meaning of geological processes for natural resources, the land use, the earth's surface organization and economic and culture history are to become experiencable for a broad public.

National geo park

The designation as national geo park is to be understood not as the further kind of a protected area of regarding but than a quality seal on time.

With the mechanism of geo parks one aims at

• to retain an intact environment following generations
• to improve the geoscientific education in the population
• to promote the economic development of the region on local level.

Geo parks are to serve the agenda 21 of the UN conference over questions of the environment and development (UNCED, Rio de Janeiro 1992) by presentation, preservation and lasting use of the geological inheritance also for the realization of the goals.

The honor "„national geo park "“is promoted and supported by the Alfred way he donation for the promotion of the geosciences, the Federal Ministry for education and research and the UNESCO. Cause for the introduction was the action 2002 - year of the geosciences. After five years it is examined whether the descriptor national geo park and the Logo for this lent planet-grounds - may world of the geosciences still rightfully be continued.

There are the first national geo parks in Germany since 1 July 2003:

As the further national geo park on 19 April 2005 the volcanic country the Eifel (the volcanic Eifel) was taken up. The volcanic Eifel was called already since the year 2000 in the context of an European Union project "„European geo park "“.

Further certifying than "„national geo park "“by the Alfred way he donation are to be expected. The geo park Ruhr district was created 2004. The request for certifying as national geo park is z.Zt. in treatment.
