The front lock mountain is because of the edge of the hard forest about two kilometers south the market Mering on a low hill. The well received ring barrier is interpreted as Hungary temporal.
Underneath the main castle the foundation walls of a Roman building were located. Some small finds confirm this findings.
When around 900 the encroachments that began Hungary on Bavaria, numerous smaller protection castles in the endangered areas developed beside some large national castles.
Also the front lock mountain might belong to this group of small weir systems. As is the case for many earlymedieval castle barrier plants any documentary or other messages are missing also here for history and time position.
The well received earth works and the form of the plant are however a clear reference to the function as Hungary protection castle. Similar ring barrier lies about seven kilometers north with Kissing on the Lechrain. Already Widukind of Corvey speaks in its chronicle of smaller castle barriers on the right Lechseite, from which the fleeing Hungary after the battle on the Lechfeld (955) are to have been fought.
Like most different of these castles also the front lock mountain lies in some distance far away from the settlement hidden in the area. At the other end of the hard forest - two kilometers removed - a further castle barrier kept. The rear lock mountain is dated however as earlyceltic (400-800 v. Chr.). Surely also this weir system was again used and developed in the time of the Hungary towers. Between the two castles a short piece of barrier with pre-aged ditch lies in the forest. The time position of this about two meters high barrier is unknown.
The plant lies about 20 meters increased on a flat hill spur. At the hill foot the castle way leads by a short, Vorwerk. Approximately two meters high barrier is pre-aged to that a ditch.
The oval main castle developed in two building phases. The original barrier process appears in the castle inside still clearly. The older, western part a piece of barrier was added eastward in such a way that the castle surface almost doubled itself.
The barrier of the main castle is high between three and five meters. The pre-aged ditch originally ran around the whole castle. After the Second World War the ditch on the north side was gradened by a farmer. The barrier crown superelevates the inside around approximately a meter.
The gate lay on that, by the slope protected eastern side. The moderately steep ascent to the castle was secured by the Vorwerk lying down.
During a smaller excavation on both sides the gate gap in regular intervals of approximately 1.3 meters foundation volumes made of stone were proven. Between the volumes was a loam layer. This foundation possibly carried a double tower gate, more exact statements about the construction can so far yet not be made. Also on the remaining barrier crown of the main castle and the Vorwerkes a stone volume of approximately a meter width runs.
Area-pure point to a spacious apron safety device by a fence or thorn-strike. Such approximation obstacles should force the eastern Reiterkrieger to serving.
The ring barrier was measured by the Bavarian national office for care of monuments and taken up topographically. Today the barrier castle is only with difficulty accessible, the area is closely with thorny brush over-rampantly grows and partly with young forest bepflanzt.
