The fortress rose mountain is a castle plant over the city Kronach. For the first time the place was mentioned 1003. The fortress was never conquered in their over history. It extends over more than 23 hectares and is considered thereby than one of the largest attachment plants of Europe.

In the fortress is the Frankish gallery of the Bavarian national museum with works of Lukas Cranach D. which originated from Kronach to visit as well as from Tilman belt cutter. In addition there an information and a Dokumentationszentrum are to fortress history and stone-cutter-museum-worth seeing are also the underground courses, the five bastions and the high donjon.

In the 1. World war was in the fortress a prisoner-of-war camp for officers, in which 1917 among other things the French captain Charles de Gaulle, who was arrested later general and president.
