The fortress Marienberg is appropriate above peppering castle in Lower Franconia.
The fortress was converted several times in the course of history. The oldest still received parts are old over 1000 years. From 1253 to 1719 the fortress Marienberg was the residence of the of prince bishops. Starting from 1573 the transformation took place to a Renaissance lock. In the war the fortress was conquered 1631 of Sweden. Under prince bishop Johann Philipp of beautiful fount 1642-1673 took place the building of further numerous military attachments and bastions.
In the Main campaign 1866 the Prussian army took to the Marienberg, which as royally Bavarian fortress served, under fires. The bombardment released a violent fire on the Marienberg, but could the Bavarian fortress artillery the fire effectively answer and the Marienberg remained up to the armistice unbezwungen.
The fortress Marienberg accommodates today the Main-Frankish museum peppering castle as well as the museum of building of princes.
