History

Preparations and funeral 1848

The first burying at the cemetery of the March-pleased were 183 civilian victims of the barricade fights of the March revolution of 18. March 1848. They became to 22. March 1848 on the lime tree mountain, which bestattet at that time highest collection still of the people park in the structure, which was called in the vernacular also cannon mountain.

The citizens of Berlin town council Daniel Alexander Benda the decision for the establishment of the new cemetery on 2.3 hectares a large surface only the day before the funeral due to a request of town councillor. It planned that beside the civilian victims also the pleased soldiers should be buried here. The decision to a common funeral had been discussed already before in the population and usually rejected, in the long run decided however the military broadly, by not making the corpses available of the dead soldiers. At the time the two windmills present at the lime tree mountain should be torn off for the plant of the funeral place. In addition a monument on at that time yet the cemetery belonging to the citizen of Berlin city and a further in the city should not be set up. Despite this resolution only one mill was torn off and the surface was substantially smaller thereby. The second mill burned 1860 down. Also the funeral of the soldiers took place not here, but only to 24. March on the invalid cemetery in Berlin center. The planned Monumente was not established likewise. The cemetery was originally squarely put on with diagonal ways, which led on a circulating way, because of which the graves were, the center of the plant formed a Rondell with a summer lime tree.

After a possibility for the private to 21. March found the funeral to 22. March instead of. On this day a procession was prepared and Berlin including citizens of Berlin of the city lock and the crowd refuge and monument in the city center in black-red-golden and was black decorated completely. Aids decorated the coffins of the pleasures with flowers from the royal garden. On the gendarme market, where the coffins were aufgebahrt, 100,000 humans were met, Adolf glass burner spoke of 300.000. In the new church, the church at the German cathedral on the gendarme market, the members of the dead ones met to an Evangelist service. The present ones sang the Choral Jesus my confidence, afterwards they left the church. The Evangelist Prediger of the new church Adolf Sydow, the catholic Kaplan Johann Nepomuk resting country of the sink Hedwigs church and the Rabbiner Michael Sachs gave a short Weiherede, inter+religious meeting, which commentated the Vossi newspaper as follows before the door: it was a historical moment, which stands there likewise in history without example, as this whole ceremony.

The procession from the new church to the cemetery consisted of 20.000 participants and 3,000 files, was about 7.5 kilometers long and took four hours. The Vossi newspaper, whose entire editorship participated in the funeral, noticed, in the carried symbols seemed to embody itself the whole history of our native country. The participants led flags from other cities likewise with itself as from individual trades in the city. Medals and uniforms however were hardly present. With the way over the citizen of Berlin lock place set the Prussian king Friedrich William IV. on the balcony, as before agreed upon, its helmet off.

On the cemetery preached the Evangelist Prediger Sydow. After it Assessor George young, the of the citizens of Berlin democrats gave, likewise a speech. In the following weeks further victims of the fights, which succumbed to their injuries, were buried at this area. The final number of the graves rose to 254.

The time up to the first anniversary 1849

The cemetery of the March-pleased became after 1848 a symbol of the German democracy movement. The plant represented thereby regularly an important intending and demonstration place.

In June 1848 it came at the graves with a demonstration citizen of Berlin student to the first action at this place. With this action they wanted to think of the dead ones and admonish at the same time the governing not to cancel the changes acquired with the revolution rashly again. A letter of the studying to municipal authorities shows this:

"“The tendency of the course is to answer often addressed disapproving and Verketzerung of a revolution to honour to which we owe the completion of our political right, and which by Verwundung crowned name of the pleasures."”

Already to 25. March 1848 was asked into different citizen of Berlin newspapers in a public proclamation for donations as well as drafts for a monument on the cemetery, to which at the anniversary of the revolution the foundation-stone should be put. In this call one turned consciously to the entire German people with the reference that the March revolution of national nature was and was not thus the citizens of Berlin alone in the obligation. The received money was administered for the committee for the establishment of the monument by a buyer named Bathow. Since this committee did not exist officially however, Bathow was with the police forced to publish the money. The whereabouts and the sum of the collected money remained unsettled, after contradictory messages it either for 1854 with the city court were deposited or changed into the pension fund of the protection people. The collection of the money led to the fact that there was no monument for the anniversary of the revolution; to this date even all graves were not equipped with simple wood crosses and the city government wanted these to finance. Thus the missing approximately 60 crosses became by a spontaneous collection between that 18. and 22. March 1849 applied.

Due to the political development up to the first anniversary of the revolution both municipal authorities and town council counted on renewed rebellions in Berlin. For this reason the crew strength of the military and the police substantial was supplemented. The Vossi newspaper wrote 20. March 1849:

The city already darbot to 17. a completely martial sight, and all measures had been met, as in they can only occur. In all villages and suburbs around Berlin important troop masses (...) stored. In particular strongly the Friedrichshain before the Landsberger gate was cerniert. The few buildings, which were because of the entrance to the Friedrichshain, were departments of Dragoons large into the smallest areas filled with soldiers (...) patrouillierten on all ways, and the Friedrichshain besides guarded by a department of policemen"…

Despite this operational readiness level of military and police 18 pulled to. March thousands to the graves of the March-pleased. It concerned particularly workers. Already in the preceding night the graves with flowers were decorated and coworkers of the Borsigwerke set up at the four corners of the cemetery one steel column each, which was equipped with two torches/flares. In the afternoon of the daily it actually came to the feared collisions between demonstrators and the protection people, who however relatively mild went out.
