The castle ruin thawing castle is appropriate approx. for eleven kilometers northeast from Jena in the midst of the Tautenburger of forest on a small mountain spur, around which the small village of the same name u-shaped put.

The castle is called documentary for the first time 1223. In the confirmation document of a donation the noble ones become Tuto of thawing castle (Tutenberc) and its son of the same name as well as its nieces and nephew or cousin and cousins (consobrini eius), under it a further Tuto of Kohren, mentions. The donation happens at the soul welfare of their deceased nephews Tuto and Friedrich. Tuto is obviously the guidance name of the older sex and probably gave it also to the castle the name. 1227 are mentioned again the knight Tuto by thawing castle in connection with a donation. The thawing castle was at this time in the hand of the Mr. von Lobdeburg Saalburg. , Shortly thereafter still 1232 ago, it went first as lobdeburgisches Afterlehen to giving Vargula.
