The castle Egloffstein lies on a rock nose northwest the place of the same name in the Trubachtal. From the castle today still the main or upper castle is present. It consists mainly of "„the old Kemenate "“and "„the long Kemenate "“. In "„the old Kemenate "“the oldest construction units of the castle would be allowed to do, perhaps in 12. History

The Mr. von Egloffstein are documentary since 1180 provable. The castle was mentioned documentary only 1358, might be substantially older however. The Mr. von Egloffstein possessed the castle first as free own.

During a feud with the bishop withdrew themselves von Bamberg 1372 of Egloffstein after the destruction of its castle Leienfels to the master castle Egloffstein. So that this was not besieged by the bishop von Bamberg, one excluded from Egloffstein 1374 from the family federation.

1376 forced the Bamberger bishop Lampert von Brunn (1374-1398) Seybot II. of Egloffstein to grant to the Bamberger high pin the opening right for the largest part of the castle.

In the first Mark count war 1449/50 the castle was unsuccessfully attacked by troops of the Mark count Albrecht Achilles on 8 April 1450 and damaged however heavily. The castle was substantially converted from 1482 to 1493.

1509 laid to Jobst on Ith of Egloffstein its part of the castle the high pin Bamberg to the Lehen. 1516 were laid on to the high pin Bamberg by wolf I. by Egloffstein the last still free-own remainder of the rule to the Lehen. The reason for it might probably have to be looked for in the financial situation of the gentlemen von Egloffstein.

Despite the constant reinforcement of the defense works the castle in the Landshuter succession war was conquered 1504 by the and down-burned partially. Again hardly developed, it became 1525 a victim of the farmer war. The reconstruction only partly and very sluggishly took place.

In connection with disputes between William III. of Egloffstein and the Bamberger bishop Veit II. of peppering castle (1561-1577) let the castle occupy and devastate these 1563.

When the village Egloffstein in the war became 1632 and 1645 of Sweden to attack, the castle suffered heavy damages, so that extensive re-establishment work was necessary. Albrecht Christoph of Egloffstein let establish 1664 a large turret.

The last wartime occupation of the castle in the Spanish succession war 1703 got over the castle without larger damage. Also the following decades brought no destruction to the castle.

1750 let the brothers Albrecht Christoph Karl and Ludwig I. of Egloffstein establish in place of the lower Kemenate with the old castle chapel the current parish church. 1800 collapsed the large turret and were cleared away.

The free-wonderful Patrimonialgericht on the castle Egloffstein existed up to the year 1848. The castle also today still is in the possession of the Mr. von Egloffstein.
