The Griensteidl in Vienna, also admits as size illusion "“, was in late 19. Century a famous artist restaurant. The coffee house was at the Michaelerplatz in the palace Dietrich stone, opposite the old castle theatre and the yard castle.

1847 - 1897

The Griensteidl, 1847 open by the former pharmacist Heinrich Griensteidl, became rapidly a meeting place Viennese man of letters. 1848, when it was a meeting place of the politicians, were renamed it temporarily in national . Later operated personalities of Franz Grillparzer to more beautiful ones here. To the authors, who operated here, belonged Hermann Bahr, Hugo of Hofmannsthal, Arthur Schnitzler as well as the young Karl Kraus.

In January 1897 the building, in which the was, in the course of the reorganization of the Michaelerplatzes was torn off. Karl Kraus used the cause, in order to account for in an essay under the title the demolirte literature with the young vienna. On 25 January 1897 special edition was to be read in pictorials the Viennese: "“The faithful regular customers celebrated the fall of the Locales with a great Leichenschmaus (...) after midnight were all feed on and drink out of print and it slaps were only given. Otherwise the tendency was famos (...)"”. The slap had missed Felix Salten Kraus for a passage of the demolirten literature, which noted Schnitzler in its diary with the words: "“Salten in the coffee house still small Kraus geohrfeigt yesterday in the evening, which was all-side joyfully welcomed (...)"”.

To the end of the Griensteidl many moved the artist, which had operated there, into the cent ral.

1990 - the new Griensteidl

1990 were opened in after 1897 of built buildings at the same place the Griensteidl. The address reads: Michaelerplatz 2, 1010 Vienna.
