Border tourism is completely generally the travel of a larger number of persons over national borders away. The term is mostly used however in another context, i.e. in the sense that it comes straight because of the border to a tourism there. It is then spoken also of purchase tourism. The form of the purchase tourism most frequently which can be found is the tank tourism.

Background

Background is that many goods and services, in particular cigarettes, gasoline and use up-free medicines abroad European substantially more cheaply are to be bought, than in the own country, so that it is worth itself, particularly for humans, who live close of the border area, to drive into the neighboring country and to settle the necessary purchases there. The border tourism at the border between Germany and Poland and/or Tschechien is particularly pronounced, because the differences in prices for the goods mentioned are here strikingly large. Same applies to the border Austria Slovenia.

Alcohol tourism is a special form, which not only by differences in prices, but also to the Prohibition of alcoholic beverages in different countries one due. It is operated for example between the Indian Gujarat and the union territory Daman and Diu. In Europe he is to be observed among other things on ferries of Stockholm or Helsinki after Tallinn, there on the ferry, in addition, in Estonia, Alkohol is more inexpensive. Since the European Union entry of Estonia this effect strengthened.

Consequences

The areas close to the border rank for historical reasons as a rule among the structure-weaker areas. By the border tourism a not insignificant part of the purchasing power flows off into the neighboring country from these areas, which is connected with substantial shortfalls in revenue with Einnahmeverslusten for the regional economy and, in case of the tank and cigarette tourism, also. On the other hand the border tourism in the neighboring countries leads to the fact that in border proximity an infrastructure develops there, which is put on purely to satisfy the needs of the border tourists however however no increase in value for the residents population brings.
