Blackfriars Bridge is a road bridge over the river Themse in London. It connects the town center OF London on the north side with the quarter Southwark in the urban district London Borough OF Southwark on the south side. It is in the possession of Bridge House Estates, a welfare organization of the corporation OF London.

The 281 meters for a long time and 32 meters broad bridge consists of five wrought-iron elbows and a cast-iron balustrade in the venezianischen style. Sculptures remind of the former on the west side this birds and flowers are, on the eastern side sea plants and water birds. Across the bridge the main street A201 leads.

After a competition Robert Mylne received the order in the year 1760 to build a new bridge. The 303 meters for a long time and 13 meters broad bridge 1769 were opened. At the beginning the bridge William Pitt Bridge (after the prime minister at that time William Pitt) was called, however in the context of the opening in Blackfriars Bridge was renamed. First still bridge toll had to be paid. While the Gordon Riots of 1780 however the duty act ions became and attacked, which led 1785 to the abolition of the bridge toll.

The seawater and dirty waste water of the tributary fleet penetrating with the tide caused substantial damage to the limestone elbows with the time. Finally one tore the bridge off 1860 and replaced her provisionally by a Wagner earth in the same place.

The bridge existing today developed under the direction of Joseph Cubitt, at the same time with the directly neighbouring Blackfriars Railway Bridge. The official opening took place on 6 November 1869 via queen Victoria. Due to constantly increasing traffic the bridge had to be widened between 1907 and 1910 around eleven meters.

On 17 June 1982 the well-known Italian banker Roberto Calvi under the bridge was found.
