Citizen of Berlin the city hall, also red city hall mentioned, is been to seat of the city government and the governing mayor of Berlin because of the city hall road and. The name of the building comes from the facade design with red clinkers.

The building was built between 1861 and 1869 by Hermann Friedrich Waesemann. Model for architecture is the city hall in Thorn in Poland. The architecture of the tower is ajar against the towers of the cathedral of Laon in France. It replaced several partial buildings originating from the Middle Ages and takes a whole road block. Thus among other things the medieval court summerhouse was torn off, Originalteile were used however in a copy by Heinrich Strack in the park Babelsberg. Since its completion it serves as city hall; after the reconstruction of the destruction of the Second World War into the 1950er years accommodated it in consequence of the division of Berlin the Ost-Berliner municipal authorities; the West-Berliner senate was accommodated until 1991 in the city hall beautiful mountain. 1991 drew the reunited administration officially again back in the red city hall. It serves since then as seat of the government.

The first city hall of Berlin stood at the whey market and had as indication of the higher jurisdiction a Roland column.
