Beefeater is a jokeful name for ceremonies the gate guards of the Tower of London. The actual designation of the guards reads Yeomen Warders, completely Yeomen Warders OF ago Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress the Tower OF London.

In principle they are responsible for the guard of the Kronjuwelen and the prisoners in-sitting in the Tower. They actually exercise nowadays only one service as leaders by the Tower and are thereby their own tourist attraction.

There are 36 Yeomen Warder, which are all former member of the British army and at least 22 years must have at least achieved active service with good guidance behind itself and the rank of a Sergeant major.

Easily to be confounded the Yeomen Warder with the Yeomen OF the Guard, which represent however an official department of the royal body guard. The Yeomen Warder carries a dark-blue weapon skirt with red collar to the usual office hours in the Tower. If the current British ruler visits the Tower or an act of state in the Tower takes place, they wear a red-golden uniform, which very similar to that the Yeomen OF the Guard sees.

The Chief Yeoman Warder is responsible to each evening around 7 minutes before 22 o'clock for the execution of the Ceremony OF the keys (key ceremony) in the Tower.

For the origin of the designation "„"“there are Beefeater different interpretations:

  • in earlier times could afford most poor people no meat (beef), whereas the gate guards got also meat as remuneration
  • Derivative of the officials at the royal board, the Buffetiers in such a way specified

Nowadays they fulfill only, for example a telling of the history of the Towers at tourists to tasks of representation. Here they tell gladly that the actual "„Beefeater is "“the Raben of the Towers, which would get daily a ration meat.
