The beautiful well was built for 1385-1396 by Heinrich Beheim and ranks among the objects of interest of the city Nuremberg. It is approx. 19 meters high and has the form of a gothical Kirchturmspitze.

In the course of history it was developed several times restored (for the first time 1822-24 by the sculptor Jacob Daniel Burgschmiet) and again. Today one is to be seen scarcely hundred years old copy from shelly limestone in color-glad painting at the chief market; the few received remainders of the stony original are in the Germanic national museum (1899-1903 under Heinrich Walraff restore, build one it again in today's form 1912 after the weathered gothical original). In the Second World War the beautiful well was wrapped into a concrete coat and got over bombardment thereby intact.

Forty colored painted figures of the well represent the conception of the world of the holy Roman realm in four floors. From downside is this: And sieve philosophy free arts, the four EH gelists and the four church fathers, the seven cure princes and the nine heroes, Moses and seven prophets.

After a legend the well should zieren as point the tower of the woman church (likewise at the chief market), this however allegedly for lack of lifting possibility was rejected. The woman church was however already geweiht 1358.

To the soccer world championship 2006 the well of the artist Olaf Metzel with a sculpture from piled up Stadionsitzen was coated. With the structure of the work of art with the title "„good-bye "“it came too partly embittered disputes between proponents and opponents.
