Battersea Bridge is a road bridge over the river Themse in London. It connects the quarter Chelsea in the urban district Royal Borough OF Kensington and Chelsea on the north side with the quarter Battersea in the urban district London Borough OF Wandsworth on the south side. It consists of five cantilever beam elbows of wrought steels and steel, which stand on columns from granite. Across the bridge the main street A3220 leads.
Up to 18. Century operated here a ferry. In the year 1766 a law passed by the parliament permitted the building to a duty-requiring bridge. A group of fifteen investors was responsible for the construction costses of altogether The bridge sketched by Henry Holland in November 1771 officially one opened and consisted of 19 wooden elbows.
The bridge was with the Flussschiffern not particularly likes, because the close together lying wood elbows made more difficult the passage. Often boats and numerous humans kenterten drowned. 1795 was widened some elbows by using steel girders on the double. William Turner and James McNeill Whistler held the Battersea Bridge on paintings.
Like the remaining duty-requiring bridges in London also the Battersea Bridge was acquired 1878 by the metropolitan board OF Works. This closed the bridge 1883, let it 1885 tear off and by a new building replace. Responsible person civil engineer was Joseph Bazalgette. The official opening took place on 31 July 1890 via lord Roseberry.
On 20 October 2005 a load punt loaded with gravel collided with one the column and caused large damage. During weeks was the bridge thereupon because of repair work closed.
