Bath Antisemitismus is the name for the wide-spread Ausgrenzung and Diffamierung of Jewish guests in German cure and bathing resorts, particularly for the time 1933 ago. The term already originated in in 19. Century. This phenomenon was not limited however to Germany. In Austria the term summer-resort Antisemitismus is well-known, and also in the USA there was a Resort Antisemitism. The first really comprehensive investigation for this published the historian franc Bajohr.
The first German seaside resorts were already opened 1800 ago, but first there the aristocracy and a small crowd remained large citizens as in other health spas under itself. Only starting from approximately 1870 the stay in Erholungsorten became also for the less wealthy middle class affordably, and the bath vacation came into mode. Fewer renowned baths were urgently dependent on the small citizens than paying guests, and there straight under them anti-Semitic of resentment were far common, tried the respective places to be recommended with them with anti-Jewish advertisement. The social Antisemitismus was purposefully used by the bath administrations, in order to become generally accepted against the competition. In many cases the agitation proceeded also directly from There are examples of it 1900 ago to is already sufficient. The most important motive was social envy, because one bath vacation meant social prestige. The straight lower middle class felt its social ascent through Jewish so mentioned" threatened.
The federation newspaper of the cent ral association of German citizens of Jewish faith published regularly warning lists with the names of anti-Semitic resorts, hotels and pensions, which became ever longer with the time. 1899 were already warned of approximately 30 holidays goals. After 1933 the lists were then redundant, because in principle all health resorts were now Jew hostile. In these lists bathing resorts and whole islands at north and Baltic Sea with distance were most strongly represented. Borkum, Juist, Wangerooge, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, Scharbeutz, Zinnowitz, Sellin on Bansin and also holy port were called again and again. When "Jew-friendly" applied actually only the tradition baths Norderney, Helgoland, Westerland, Wyk on and herring village, which did not have anti-Semitic advertisement necessarily. A comparable massing of anti-Semitic Erholungsorte gave it 1933 ago in no other German holidays region, so the result of franc to Bajohr (see literature).
End 19. Century recruited numerous baths uninhibited to be "Jew-free" to reread e.g. in an island leader for Borkum from the year 1897. One invented the Borkumlied, which was played daily by the Kurkapelle and sung by the guests, and in which it is called among other things "at Borkums beach only Deutschtum applies, the Panier is only German. We regard the honour sign Germania pure for and as! But who approaches you with plates feet, with noses bent and hair frizzily, which is not to enjoy your beach, that must outside, that must outside! Borkum was already to the turn of the century a center of the Antisemiten. On hotels describe with the label Jews and dogs did not hang may here in here! , inside there was a timetable between Borkum and Jerusalem (Retourkarten are not spent)". 1910 published travel guides against over the North Sea baths "Israeliten" advised particularly the attendance Borkums, "it there to be otherwise must, by the partially very anti-Semitic visitors in most inconsiderate way to be troubled".
In the time of the Weimar Republic the anti-Semitic agitation became increasingly more radical. Now the Jews became after the lost 1. World war as "war and inflation profiteers" denunziert. Ever more frequently it came also to violent encroachments against Jewish guests. Zinnowitz eiferte the example Borkums with a Zinnowitzlied after with the final lines: "And who does not approach there from the trunk Manasse is desired, sei's refuses. We do not like a strange race! The Itz remains far by Zinowitz." Even on Norderney Jewish guests were seen waited into the 1920er years rather as gladly. Those Weimar flag in the national colors black-red-golden applied in the seaside resorts as "Jew rag", here rather hisste one the Hohenzollern flag in black-and-white red and already 1933 ago every now and then also the swastika flag.
Of on Usedom Greifswalder newspaper reported on 19 August 1920: "On Saturday evening against 11 o'clock Jew-hostile demonstrations on the Strandpromenade took place. A large crowd, among them realm military soldier and a naval member, pulled with music and singing before different restaurants. There Jew-hostile speeches contents, patriotic songs were sung and discharged threatening calls against Jewish bathers." Also of Wangerooge there were 1920 reports in the summer that everywhere notes with anti-Semitic slogans of the protection and Trutz federation hung and were go-eaten on the beach swastika flags. The Jewish writer Victor Klemperer, which made vacation in herring village several times into the 1920er years, wrote 1927 over Zinnowitz, likewise on Usedom: "Zinnowitz would be a bath like the others here also, but it is stresses Jew-pure bath, it is still superior in Jew purity Bansin. At (much are enough) the landing bar it leads the swastika flag (...)". That was years 1933 ago.
Isolated there were attempts to order to the open Antisemitismus stop. Thus the district government in Aurich left 1924 a playing of the Borkumliedes forbid and used police, in order to also implement this prohibition. But the district court Emden and afterwards also the Prussian higher administrative court lifted the disqualification. Quintessential point of the reason: The song is expression of the constitutional right to free expression of opinion.
The national socialists could tie starting from 1933 in the seaside resorts directly to anti-Jewish propaganda, whereby the NSDAP took over now the purposeful control. 1935 was completely displaced of the beaches of the German north and Baltic Sea Jewish holiday-makers. An appropriate decree of the realm ministry of the Interior from July 1937 was actually redundant therefore.
The counterpart to the bath vacation of the middle class was in sea-far Austria the summer-resort. And also in the Austrian resorts unconcealed Antisemitismus already showed up before 1900. Contrary to the German places here the agitation proceeded also central from tourism organizations and Fremdenverkehrsvereinen, with which one likewise served of existing resentment of the middle class. Thus in the year the Christian-social realm advice delegate and priest Joseph Scheicher expressed 1900: Where one does not spit - anything as a Jew. All summer-resorts, baths, all Wintercurorte, everywhere it wimmelt from Jews ".
The role of the pioneer transferred to Tirol, where the stranger association decided 1897: "Inquiries of Jews have to remain unconsidered." On the holidays folders of the place an appropriate print was to be read. The place did not let 1908 banks set up with the label "for Jews and a place". did not call itself as "arische summer-resort of first rank", other summer-resorts granted "the stay only to Ariern", in the Wachau and in Schladming was "Jews desired". Every now and then it was called somewhat discrete "pleasant stay for Christian families". The number that officially "Jew-pure" resorts was twice as high in Austria as in the German Reich.
After the end of the monarchy also here the clay/tone became sharper, the violent attacks on Jews increased. The upper-Austrian national teacher association called 1920 Jewish guests in bath Ischl "smuggler and Bath Ischl, bath Gastein and bath Aussee had a relatively high portion of Jewish Sommerfrischler before the "connection" of Austria in the year 1938 traditionally. 1924 requested Jewish in bathing with Vienna national socialist to emigrate the place too abandoned and to Palestine. Also in the local press anti-Semitic articles appeared again and again.
The 1890 created Austrian mountain association accepted in principle only "German people comrades" as members. In Vienna 1905 a section of the GermanAustrian alpine association were created, exclusive for "German arischer descent".
