The Austriabrunnen consists of a column, which is crowned by a statue. It acts around the crowned Austria, personifizierte Austria, with Speer and sign in the hand. Around the column four Allegorien of the four most important rivers of the habsburgischen realm stand. It concerns the Elbe, the Danube, the Weichsel and the Po.
The Austriabrunnen was sketched in the year 1844 by the resident of Munich sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler and poured until 1846 in Munich von Ferdinand Miller. Model for this is Alma of Goethe, which granddaughter of the famous poet, to have confessed. An anecdote tells for this that Schwanthaler let the figures before the dispatch with cigarettes fill. These should be smuggled in such a way to Austria. An illness has however prevented that Schwanthaler take the cigarettes before the list of the well to the statues would have can. Since the last restoration is disproved this as legend.
