The Arlberg is a mountain massif between Vorarlberg and Tirol. Synonymously the term stands also for a world-well-known tourism region (particularly as winter sports area) and for the traffic-technically important Arlbergpass (1793m NN).
The name Arlberg is derived from here very numerous , thus here the Latschen so mentioned. To an older excessive quantity the name is to lead away itself from a Arlenburg, which is to have lain to feet of the Arlbergpasses on Tiroler side once. These popular derivatives are rather as presumptions to classify - it is many more probable that the name Arlberg is derived from the Italian term "albergo", which to German "lodging" is called or in the today's linguistic usage "hotel". There on the Arlbergpass in the today's place pc. Christoph/Arlberg already since that 14. Century a lodging for distressed travelers exists (the today's Arlberg Hospiz hotel), probably is this thesis the most durable. From the name Arlberg is derived in the consequence also the name of the Land of the Federal Republic '' Vorarlberg '', which - from Swiss view seen - lies before the Arlberg.
The Arlbergpass crosses the Arlberg in east west direction. The Flexenpass lies north and connects the monastery valley with the Lechtal.
There are four municipalities in the Arlberggebiet, it meets all at the summit of the Valluga. These are Lech and in Vorarlberg, as well as pc. Anton at the Arlberg and emperor in Tirol.
Rooms and being enough belong to Zrs and course to Lech, and pc. Christoph to pc. Anton.Einige localities in the monastery valley carry the additive at the Arlberg (e.g. forest at the Arlberg), do not rank however strictly speaking not among the Arlberg.
The history of the Arlbergs hangs closely with its meaning as important traffic route together (see Arlbergpass). End 19. Century made the Arlbergbahn an efficient binding for Vorarlbergs possible to the Danube monarchy. 1978 were created by the building of the Arlbergschnellstrasse and the Arlbergstrassentunnels also for the individual traffic (nearly) a winter-safe connection between Tirol and Vorarlberg. In distances of several years however even these connections must become closed with Wetterkapriolen for some hours until days.
A travel by the Arlberg road tunnel costs 8,50" (conditions: March 2006).
The tourism forms the main source of income of the places at the Arlberg and their inhabitants.
Today the term Arlberg is a mark for the winter sports areas, which group themselves around the Arlbergpass, in particular the skiing areas of Lech, pc. Christoph and pc. Anton. The area is well-known for its long winter sports tradition. 1901 were already created the ski club Arlberg, which out-carried two years later a first club running. 1904 took place first general Arlberg running, 1928 first famous Arlberg Kandahar running. 1921 developed under the direction of Hannes cutter with the ski school Arlberg the first ski school in the region. 1937 was built both in pc. Anton and in the first lift systems. With the ski WM 2001 in pc. Anton returned the alpine ski (run) sport at the Arlberg and thus to its roots.
Today the coherent skiing areas on three mountains form approximately around Lech and ("the white ring"), the enormous arena on Gampen, cape universe, Galzig and Valluga above for St.Anton and St.Christoph, which again with the Albonagebiet in rooms - one the best deep snow Spots of the alps - on the other side of the Arlbergpassstrasse is connected, as well as the Rendlgebiet south of St.Anton an enormous ski department with 86 lift systems, 276 km prepared runways and 180 km deep snow departures. The latters make the Arlberg one of the most well-known Freeride centers of Austria and/or the entire alps. By the many winter sportsmen an enormous meaning came to the tourism at the Arlberg. Thus between 1 November 2001 and 31 October 2002 was counted for the first time over one million overnight accomodation.
Still into the 1980er if years nearly all hotels in the summer were closed, and resembled the places thereby "spirit cities", the region discovers the summer tourism in the last years ever more also.
