The airport Munich Franz Josef bunch, 28 km north of Munich, became to 17. May 1992 taken in enterprise, after the old airport had become too small Munich Riem. The airport serves today as spider Lufthansa and thus the star Alliance and has thereby international meaning.

The airport was designated after the former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef bunch. Usually however of "„airport Munich II is spoken "“, "„airport Munich "“or after the IATA code only of "„MUC "“.

It forms the second largest aviation spider of Germany to the Rhine Main airport. Based on the passenger number it occupies at present (conditions:" April 2006) the sieved place in Europe to the airport London Gatwick and before the airport Rome Fiumicino. World-wide it lies to the 33. Position in the Ranking of the international airports. (Conditions:" 2005)

History

Prehistory of aviation in Munich

The first airport of the city Munich was the 1912 for the royal-Bavarian flier troop created airfield Oberschleissheim. It today still is as special airfield in enterprise.

Later in upper meadow field a new airport was then built, which had become too small however after some time. Thereupon 1936 were begun with the building airport of the Munich Riem. The airport upper meadow field was however continued to use. Later there the olympia area for XX developed. Olympic plays 1972.

In October 1939 the airport Munich Riem was finally taken in enterprise.

First planning

1955 one already thinks over a development of the Riemer of airport with a further runway. When on 17 December 1960 finally still another military machine fell on a fully occupied Trambahn at the corner Bavarian route/Martin seize road in the residents of Munich city center and killed 55 humans, one demanded, to build a new airport far from the city to.

1963 were used for the determination of a suitable location a commission, which 3 years later Erdinger Moos and Hofoldinger forest recommended the locations. Among other things at that time in addition, a location between Augsburg and Munich was in the discussion, similarly as the airport Cologne/Bonn, in order to ensure a good binding of the population of the region Augsburg to an international airport.

On 5 August 1969 on suggestion Bavarian minister of economics at that time Schedl was decided to build the airport in the Erdinger Moos. Already 1970 announced themselves 5724 plaintiffs, from whom 40 sample plaintiffs became certified, although only 1974 were begun with the plan statement procedure as well as an architectural competition. To build by the resolution the airport in the Erdinger Moos, also decided the 400-Seelen-Ortschaft Franzheim in the Erdinger Moos abzusiedeln.

The building phase

On 3 November 1980 with the building of the airport was begun, whereby a dozen of persons lived only approximately in Franzheim. However the construction work had to be stopped again after five months, since the Bavarian administrative court complaints allowed that the land consumption would be too large. Thus a revision of the plans had to take place, why the construction work could be taken up only 4 years later again.

At first the air haven as a 4-Parallelbahnen-Flugplatz planned, where first was then given up automatically, the other one was prevented by over planning caused of court of the airport opponents. The court kept at that time settled in the grounds by the airport Munich GmbH submitted growth prognosis, for too unrealistically and too highly. Ironically however this prognosis from at that time were never kept, since the airport from the beginning always lay over it, which was above all also because of the strategic decision of Lufthansa to develop in Munich a second German spider to Frankfurt.

In the year 1989 the terminal celebrated 1 arranging celebration, which Tower already used since 1991. To 17. May 1992 pulled the complete airport over night of the airport Munich Riem to the airport Franz Josef bunch with freesings over. After rising passenger numbers in June 2003 the new terminal 2 was then opened. Thus the airport has in the meantime a capacity of 45 million passengers per year.

The airport area in Riem was transformed up to the monument-protected Tower and coat of arms hall to the fair city Riem.

Situation

The airport is to approx. 28.5 km north of Munich in the Erdinger Moos on a Gemarkung of the city freesings, as well as the municipalities upper thing, Hallbergmoos and Marzling. The Erdinger Moos was thinly populated before the building of the airport. Inhabitants had to be resettled in particular, most ranked nevertheless among the given up scattered housing estate Franzheim for the building of the starting and runways. At the same time by businessmen frequently the large distance of the airport of the city centre Munich and the associated long journey time is criticized.

Traffic route

Road

The airport can traffic technical for the moment with the motorway A 92 of the west be attained as well as the state State of St2584 from the east. By means of Lufthansa's air haven of bus gives it a binding at Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Ingolstadt, Regensburg and Munich city center-planned is a motorway section of the planned A94 with Dorfen west, there can the A92a with the A94 be connected. Connection points: Autobahndreick airport west, Schwaig, Erding, motorway interchange Dorfen west

Rail

Over the lines S1 and S8 gives it a connection to to residents of Munich the rapid-transit railway net. Thus drives every ten minutes a rapid-transit railway from the residents of Munich city center to the airport, because of the long travel time (about 40 minutes starting from city center) this binding on the part of the operator company of the airport and the course as is not sufficiently felt.

The rail binding is to be improved clearly, become for this several variants discussed. Planning for "„the Erdinger Ringschluss is relatively safe "“, which extends the rapid-transit railway (S2) of Erding toward airport. An acceleration of the connection into the city center would be that not, however one wants to achieve a direct connection between the airport and the fair Munich. For this the S2 additionally still north the fair Munich a small swivel make gotten and a stop fair north.

Additionally there is planning for a regional station at the airport. In addition a rail binding from at the Inn is to take place with the help of the S2 of connection after Erding, as well as a short new building distance between Erding and Dorfen. The tying up to the connection land hat are more disputed - Munich with the airport. Here several variants are discussed. So for instance "“the Marzlinger clip"” (branching before the city freesing and routing of the east to the airport), which "“Neufahrner curve"” (branching after the city freesing, swivels coming into the existing tracks of the S1 von Westen in) or the "“Pullinger clip"” (similarly the "“Neufahrner curve"”, only swivels these clearly in former times after southeast). The new Bavarian minister of economics Erwin Huber sets himself over the "“Neufahrner curve"” for vehement for a realization of a first stage of development (completion until 2010). This is to be served then by a rapid-transit railway in the 20-minutes pulse, as well as an airport express starting from land hat in the hour clock. The travel time shortens thereby with 40 minutes - compared to the present bus connection off freesing (travel time at least 59 minutes starting from land hat) around 1/3, meant however also in particular an enormous comfort improvement by substantially shorter transfer ways particularly in freesing. A direct connection between land hat and the airport with a travel time of maximally 20 minutes is desired on a long-term basis, in order to make a inquire-fair binding possible of East Bavaria.

Transrapid

In addition to time a binding is planned by Transrapid with a running time by approximately 10 minutes starting from Munich main station. The plan statement procedure for this began with requesting the Planfeststellung at the railway Federal Office by the German course on 28 February 2005. A Planfeststellung is aimed at at present for in the middle of 2007. The complaints which can be expected following on it let kind of building for 2008/9 appear possible. At present one counts then on one construction period of 4 years. The city Munich however always announced doubts against this project because of the high costs and suggested as alternative an express rapid-transit railway with a travel time of approximately 25 minutes starting from main station to the airport. The city would not have to take part however with the Transrapidkosten, whereas with an express rapid-transit railway the case would be. Although also for an express rapid-transit railway partial new Schienenverbindungen would have to be built to the airport, would be substantially smaller the costs of such. The main obstacles at present are probably the adjacent resident complaints which can be expected, as well as the unsettled financing matter.

Independently of the finally built variant there is at present already an additional station area under the airport, somewhat north of the current rapid-transit railway yard been, which could serve e.g. as Transrapidbahnhof.
